A classified ad for a baby?

Could this ad ostensibly from a man offering his little girl for adoption actually be legit? Heart-breaking.

oh dear this really does have scam written all over it. And I expect it will make the scammer a lot of money. There are plenty of good hearted people out there. This sort of dispicable scammer will start out slowly, building a bit of a relationship with the respondant, sending photos etc until they've got an emotional hook in, and then it'll be 'now we need the fee for this' and to start with it will all sound so reasonable. I hope to goodness that no-one actually flies to another country in response to this - scammers like to lure people to their country, where they have the upper hand, can get as much money as possible out of the person and even a ransom out of their family.

Interesting comment about it possibly being a scam; to be honest, that thought did cross my mind earlier, but I decided not to be cynical for once. Sad either way really.

I've posted an update to the original post with a reply from the man who calls himself "Franc."

It's very sad, but in America adoption is a lot more common. From what I gather from my friends in the US there is little stigma about 'giving' up your child. In fact they are stunned it doesn't really happen in the UK whenever we have discussed it. But I pointed out that we have more access to free contraception and abortion. Also we have very supportive welfare system. I hope this man finds a good home for his daughter and gets the authorities to check prospective parents out throughly.

Terribly sad. Of course, social services would be involved in Britain to help, etc. but according to this he's in Nashville. Tennessee is one of the poorest states in the US (I believe) and probably (disclaimer: this is speculation) has very little in terms of social services support. If he's as uneducated as his post indicates (from the writing, and the muddling of foster care with adoption), my guess is that he's very isolated, doesn't have a lot of resources (either physical or emotional) and just trying to do the best he can. Poor man.

That is so sad, for both the baby and the father who feels hopeless and that he can't cope with raising her on his own. I hope he gets the help he needs, whether it's adoption of his child or just some more support.

It's interesting that he muddles fostering and adoption or perhaps he means it would be fostering to start with. Loads of women work and have children on their own but of course none of us can really know what might drive a parent to give a child away (and many women did because of shame in our culture from having babies out of wed lock before about 1960 here).

It's like the children given away in the Depression, it's so sad and must be the last resort, if true, but surely the authorities will be intervening any minute to make sure Baby Brenda is given to some nice PC couple of their choosing....
