The new blog all about the education system

School

The Times has just launched its new blog all about education: School Gate.

Sarah Ebner, who's hosting the blog, has already got some great posts:

* The most embarrassing recipients of honorary degrees

* A poll on whether end-of-term gifts have gone out of control. (If you missed the comments from an AM reader about having to fork over money for a group gift, read them now.)

* The 10 best blogs about education

Check it out!

No worries, KM, I was being sort of sarcastic but not v. clear; "Oh dear" really referred to the (what did you call it? pink tickling?). A bit too twee for me, really (OK, now I've probably insulted half the population...)

Oh no, LazyMummy, don't go over to Netmums (except for research purposes, obviously)
They have health visitors posting online in case the masses give out dodgy advice. Oh, OK, maybe that is sensible, but it always seems a bit nanny-ish to me.
Apparently they censor the names of rival websites too, although I can't be sure if this is actually silly gossip or not. Never actually tried.
It's probably all lovely and they hug each other lots.

Thanks gipsy and KM. Just read the whole 'us time' thread and annoyed DH by sniggering at the laptop while supposed to be doing the on line shopping !

Posted by: abbie | 13 Jul 2008 21:01:50

Oh dear. A new discovery. Hmm, and I'd just about got my brain around Mumsnet (far more fun, imo).

Posted by: Lazy Mummy | 13 Jul 2008 06:21:32

If you look at Netmums, LazyMummy, there are all these coloured tickers that posters have under their names. Like "I've been breastfeeding for seven days now"
"Isn't life great as a Mummy"
And "My best friend is my teddy."
I am refraining from making the obvious comment about the quality of debate.

*pounces on Abbey* ooh someone else to play with. Please do come join us in the Cyber M&B thread ... er no that's not what it is called. Besides it has veered into Prison Break. Um. I think it is actually called the Us Time thread.

Come, join us, Caitlin hands out bottles of wine at the door...

KM What is pink tickeritis?

Posted by: Lazy Mummy | 11 Jul 2008 19:27:16

Hello
It's Sarah here, who edits School Gate.
I would hope it's not going to be anti-state school biased, as my daughter attends a state school and we are pretty happy with it...
Please continue reading and comment on SG too.
Thanks

There is always that danger Abbie but we haven't developed pink tickeritis yet.

And we're always looking for new blood, I mean new friends to quarrel with.

Come and help us write Caitlin's adulterous story on the other thread.

Posted by: KM | 11 Jul 2008 17:57:16

You all seem to know each other very well. In danger of turning into netmums ?
Education blog seems interesting but I hope it's not going to be as anti state school biased as the rest of the paper!

Posted by: abbie | 11 Jul 2008 16:38:38

Pfffffftttt @ KM.

Lucy - I'm confused. I don't understand what you mean. What other way is there to communicate with people?

Posted by: Gipsy | 11 Jul 2008 15:21:25

Love the deadpan, KM and Gipsy. Personally, I worry that home-educated children will grow up wondering why Mummy's friend Caitlin only seems to communicate via the computer ...

Posted by: Lucy | 11 Jul 2008 14:38:47

I'd certainly, for myself, always reserve home-edding as a very real option if a child is desperately unhappy at a school, and no resolution to the problem seems forthcoming. Yes, there are downsides to home-edding, but a child unhappy for years and years, every school day, is not something any parent should force it to endure, I think.

Also, if a school is particularly 'bad' educationally speaking in terms of your own child, home-edding is, again I feel, a viable alternative.

It's a big decision though, and not one to be taken lightly.

Just cos you is a New Zealander.

Posted by: KM | 11 Jul 2008 14:07:54

Good point but really, is home ed the answer? The child will inevitably end up watching more than 20 minutes of TV, be exposed to adverts for Bratz dolls, find a stick to turn into a gun in the garden, and might not be fed any spicy food. You'll only end up raising a promiscuous, violent, racist with no attention span.

Posted by: Gipsy | 11 Jul 2008 13:56:42

It's hard to know how to commment on this.

Um, let me try to start a debate.

I think education is, er, a good thing in principle, but not if it's educating the child to be a Nazi. Then it's better to take them out of the school and home-ed.
Thank you for listening to my point of view so respectfully.
