5 other things Mark Ronson could make cool
Jelly is cool again, evidenced by music producer supremo and groovy guy extraordinaire Mark Ronson ordering one in the shape of St Paul's Cathedral for his £30,000 birthday party. But let's face it, Ronson is the male Kate Moss. Everything he deigns to touch is instantly cool and covetable. He's dated girl-about-town Daisy Lowe. He's produced the Amy Winehouse sound. And he's a snappy dresser.
So why stop at outmoded, nursery dishes? Here, some suggestions for other things Mark should make popular, if only to prove his awesome power:
1. Baggy y-fronts. Out with the D&G hardbodies wearing formfitting briefs, in with the slightly grey, washed-too-often Hanes.
2. Ear and nose hair. Ronson is only, like, 32 but that's OK. We'll wait.
3. Stamp collecting. Celebrity game trends are nothing new but Ronson has the star power to make philately a group activity. Think of it as the new dominoes or the new backgammon or the new not-wearing-knickers.
4. Smiley face emoticons and exclamation points. He could do it!!!!!!! ;-)
5. Dating Sarah Ferguson. Hmmm, but then again...

As far as I'm concerned jelly was always cool - must be the only sugar free dessert I know that's still just as tasty as the sugary version, plus you get that fun childhood party nostalgia. Magic! :o)

He is one of the most beautiful men in a while. Those eyes ...

I'd gladly take Mark Ronson home, I think he's cute.

Hmmm not sure about the Style Council! The Jam were very much *the* mods band in the early 80s. I think that the style council were something they pretend didn't happen.
Northern Soul as in music comes from America, 1960s, mostly from the Motown label but lots of other smaller labels too. Motown is the most well known and gives you an idea of the sound. Think Gino Washington (who I saw a couple of years ago and is still utterly amazing), and Jackie Wilson. It has a style of dancing too that frankly is beyond my pathetic abilities. And it is Northern Soul too because of its popularlity up North - Sheffield, Manchester - where the scene is still quite strong. Skinheads (not the BNP kind) tend towards Ska but it's not a 'vs' like it might have been in the early 80s when the Specials released their 'Ghost Town' single which was about all that (all the fighting had stopped people from going to the clubs in the cities paticularly London, so this town was becoming like a ghost town). This is all second hand info from the folks who were there at the time like hubs since I was 12,000 miles away in NZ. Apologies for getting any of it wrong :)

Mark Ronson has to be the worst person on the planet, whoever can take some drunken old has-bean and get her to ruin a song that was good by The Zutons should be shot. I used to like Valerie until Amy got hold of it.

Strange how no-one thought Ronson cool when his first, hip-hop inspired album came out. Then he does a covers album with one drum pattern and the glorious Dap Kings horns and suddenly he's the coolest man on earth. Don't see it myself.
The whole idea that someone like Ronson has "made jelly cool" is a ridiculous media creation.
Must go now, got to sprinkle some sawdust on my floor and practice my back flips.

Nope, cut and paste doesn't work - why can you not link things to this blog?
Anyway, anyone interested: type in Northern Soul at Wigan Casino youtube and you should get that one and a selection of others.
it's worth it - no - really . . . :)

Oh, I see the link hasn't gone blue but perhaps a cut and paste of it will work.
You'll see the "real thing" from way back then at Wigan Casino.
I think Mr Ronson will have to review his dress code if he's to revive Northern Soul :)

I didn't say I liked Northern Soul, I only meant it would be a meaningful thing to undertake :)
I'm sorry it's never gone away though.
Links to youtube and wotnot don't seem to work on this blog, but never say die . . .

ha, nah, I'm 38, but I never liked the Style Council much either. I just traipse through life happily ignoring what I'm not interested in... I've no idea about genres of music, I just know what I like!
I'd quite like to be 20-something again though.

Jelly is particularly good with vodka in, of course.

Nicky,
Think you just outed yourself as a 20-something? Northern Soul was big in the '60s onwards - with a resurgence in the '80s when Paul Weller tried to do it with The Style Council, but being from Woking made the Northern part a bit off. (It was a bit of a resurgence of the Mods vs. Rockers only Northern Soul vs. Skinheads vs. Indies as I recall). Personally I've never been a fan & didn't like the boys' clothes either.
Anyway I can quite categorically state one thing: this Ronson bloke is nowhere near half as cool as Barack Obama. We have it on good authority from Jen Howze herself - he even calls dreadlocks "tight" so he must be cool.
(I promise, sometime in the next week or so, the elation will wear off & I'll stop gushing at every opportunity).

Ok, what's Northern Soul?
I don't know who Mark whatsisface is either, but I do like jelly. Especially with cold custard. Yum.

Eating jelly with a fork, yay!
Bring back Northern Soul? For goodness sake woman, it has never left! :) Well, that might be the circles we move in - no not Sheffield, but close. Isle of Wight, August Bank Holiday weekend, Ryde, nothing but Northern Soul, Motown and Ska, and on one memorable occasion a covers band doing Northern Soul tracks to a Ska beat.
Whimsey, you are quite right. I have no idea who Mark Ronson is either. I take it he's a pop singer? Or has a band? Something to do with music I think.

Ha, ha, Gipsy, I had exactly the same thought...obviously Mark Ronsen has never had to entertain children on a wet Sunday afternoon with a broken video player...

Jelly has never been out of fashion in our house. He's actually behind the times.
Pah!

Bring back Northern Soul?
Just for the record, I've never heard of him . . . do anything useful then, does he?
Posted by: dot king | 7 Nov 2008 16:41:24
and those three comments covered it all nicely!!!!!
;-)

Who on earth is Mark Ronson?
Posted by: Whimsey | 7 Nov 2008 16:16:01
When did jelly go out of fashion?
Posted by: Gipsy | 7 Nov 2008 15:41:14
What about too-short trousers that ride just above the ankle? Oh wait...that is already fashionable
