Proof that romance isn't dead

Their eyes had met across a crowded New Year's Eve celebration and they just knew they had to be together.

That's when six and seven-year-old Mika and Anna-Lena from Germany decided to elope to Africa to get married, dragging along Anna-Lena's five-year-old sister as a witness, the BBC says.

The trio, identified only by their first names, crept from the house on New Year's Day as their parents slept and travelled 1km without passports or money to the local station, where they caught a tram to Hanover station. A guard raised the alarm after spotting the children waiting for a train to the airport.

Police spokesman Holger Jureczko told AFP that the young couple were "very much in love" and had decided to get married in Africa "where it is warm".

Surely this is the best story of 2009 already.

Undeniably cute and not a little heart warming!

I look forward to seeing them doing TV interviews and becoming international celebrities!

Hope that they really do get married one day...

Erm, just one little point... they met because their parents are "partners". i.e. they are stepbrother and sister.... Lends a bit of a twist to the story....

While not wishing in any way to condone the idea that trying to run away is a good thing... this was incredibly cute.

This would never have happened in England...

..they would have just moved into a council house and started claiming Disability Benefit for "stress arising from parental/household security issues" and some form of age discrimination. The parents would presumably be fully investigated by Social Services who would find that the parents involved have raised two bright, intelligent and resourceful children who, even at just six and seven, already have a better concept of morality than 90% of our nation's youth.

Sorry, feeling a bit cynical today. This story has thawed me a little though...

Oh wow...brings back memories...I got married at 7 to my first love, though we honeymooned in the kindy playground all recess. It was all very romantic.
Unfortunately, we got divorced two years later...

Awwwh.
As naughty as it was, you can't deny that their intentions were sweet.

Oh my! When my younger daughter was... erm... younger, she always ran away to Africa (but usually she only got one street away because she knew she wasn't allowed to cross the main road)

What made her really mad was when I used to offer to pack her bag for her.
