Corey Feldman talks to Blockbuster Buzz about movies, blogging, and being a secret vampire
Lost Boys 2 may be the most unexpected sequel of the year. The widely-imitated teenagers-versus-vampires original is one of those movies that everyone who lived through the 1980s still remembers fondly but the idea that after 21 years, Edgar Frog would once again be donning his bandana and taking on the undead sounded a little too much like wishful thinking.
The new movie features a new generation of teenage vampire hunters as nominal leads but everyone who knows what Lost Boys is about know that it's Corey's movie. We asked him about the new film, and found out along the way that he has a little vampire blood running through his own veins....
Were you surprised that this movie got made after all that time?
Yes. Very. Over the years I’d had talks with Richard Donner and Joel Schumacher about various ideas for a sequel and more or less gave up on the idea of it ever happening. Then there was talk of it appearing as a low-budget DVD but I just didn’t like idea and I didn’t like the script. Then last July one of the producers came to my birthday party, we got talking and y’know..here we are.
The original movie’s a teen classic – is this movie aimed more at teens now, or the people who loved the first Lost Boys?
Both, I hope. One of the best experiences I’ve had so far with this movie was at ComicCon, where they had a trailer set up like my trailer that I live in in the movie. They had trailers and clips playing on screens inside and they were giving away red Edgar Frog bandanas. Thousands of people were wearing them all around the festival and at the screening there were..like..3,000 people cheering the action all wearing these bandanas.
Quite a few people have commented on how you’ve hardly aged since the Eighties. Are you in fact a vampire?
Yes I am. (long pause..then laughter) People are always assuming I have Botox or surgery or something but I just don’t believe in the ageing process. I don’t drink alcohol, I’m a vegetarian and I think all that helps.
Was Corey Haim’s cameo planned to be a much larger part at some point?
Well, initially he wasn’t set to be in the movie at all. I really pushed for him to be included and at one point we were scheduled to shoot I think 3 scenes with him. Then there were some breakdowns and problems with the shoot, and Warners effectively restructured the deal after it was agreed so he just ended up doing this little cameo.
Does it bug you that you 2 will always be linked in peoples minds?
Well it was a coincidence originally, the first time we worked together was Lost Boys, of course..then it was complete chance that we were both cast in License to drive, and the third film only happened because his girlfriend at the time was cast to play my girlfriend in the movie.
How did you feel when you heard Angus Sutherland was in the movie ?
Well my first question was ‘Can he act?’ Before this he was just a regular college boy..I think this might be his second movie, I think he was in another one before (he was in Harold & Kumar) but y’know – he read for the part just like any other actor and he was right for it.
Have you read the spinoff comic book, Reign of Frogs?
Yes, I helped out on some of the dialogue for that too, just ensuring that what Edgar Frog said in the book was true to my character.
One of the huge differences between the release of the 1st movie & now is the power of bloggers – Do you read reviews and comments on sites like IMDB & Ain’t it Cool?
Yes. I’m one of those people who reads absolutely everything. I love the closer connection with the fans..I have my own blog too which helps me talk directly to the fans and clear up those situations when I’ve been misquoted in the press and so on.
What’s next for Corey Feldman?
Quite a lot – I have this movie Lucky Fritz that I’ve been filming in Germany, a horror movie called The Terror Inside, and a new album with my band Truth Movement. The cover’s been done by Storm Thorgerson who did all the classic Pink Floyd albums and we also have John Carin who’s played keyboards on on lots of Floyd albums too.
There's a lot of talk about a third Lost Boys film – Just natural excitement or is something going to happen?
Well, I don’t know – The studio are very happy with the response to Lost Boys 2 and it’s being talked about a lot but there’s nothing certain…yet!

I think it's splendid that Corey is back on the Silver Screen. Always felt that the industry was missing out ona real talent by not giving him more work between his teenage success and now. Stand By Me is one of the best movie takes of Stephen King's work, IMHO, and Corey's performance was exquisite. Welcome back, mate.
