Old foulmouth is back

Ricardo MayorgaRicardo Mayorga (left) was once world welterweight champion and beat Vernon Forrest. Now he tends to take hefty beatings from high-profile fighters. Yet throughout his career he has managed to turn unpleasantness into an art.

When Floyd Mayweathar trashtalks, he does it with a glint in his eye. Mayorga means it. He hates everyone and if he isn't attacking them with his fists at a press conference, he is shouting his mouth off about them. In fact, he's so unpleasant, he's funny.

Here he is in a conference call talking about his upcoming November 23 bout with Fernando Vargas (who is also the object of his ridicule):

"I said publicly that ‘fatty’ has always feared me.  I conceded to take this fight at 162 pounds because fatty couldn’t lose any more weight.  I told the press he is a fat ass like the Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio.  I agreed to move the weight up to 166 pounds after the postponement so he can eat all the tacos and burritos with cheese and chili like Mexicans do, but only if he agrees to come and fight me toe to toe like a Mexican on Nov. 23."

  • Ron Lewis fell in love with boxing after being taken to the Albert Hall to watch Dave 'Boy' Green as a nine-year-old. He wrote for Boxing News while at school and, after a career in local papers, climaxing with three years as group editor of the Hounslow Chronicle, he joined The Times in 2001, taking over boxing coverage in 2002.
