« Witter gets a contender by default | Main | David Haye makes light work of Enzo Maccarinelli »

March 08, 2008

London notes (2)

Joe Calzaghe, unsurprisingly, is picking his friend and sparring partner, Enzo Maccarinelli to beat David Haye. "As far as I'm concerned, Enzo has the speed, power and everything needed to win this fight," Calzaghe, who will be ringside tonight, said. "Haye looked good against [Jean-Marc] Mormeck, but Mormeck is Mormeck, he's not Enzo Maccarinelli.
While Haye has made a big deal about staying on US time for the late start, Calzaghe is not expecting Maccarinelli to sleep in. "He's like me, so he'll be up early," Joe said. "You always want to lie in but the adrenalin and excitement kicks in and you can't get back to sleep. That's what happened when I fought Jeff Lacy. Have a cold shower at about 11pm and he'll be fine."

*******************************************
John Keane, from Northampton, will be the referee for tonight's bout. There will also be three British judges.

*******************************************
Evander Holyfield, the four-time world heavyweight champion, will be ringside for the big fight. He has been in Britain for the past week promoting his new autobiography, Being Holyfield. An interview with him will be appearing here next week.

*******************************************
There are still some tickets available for tonight's bout for those who fancy turning up to see the best all-British bout in 15 years and trying to buy tickets at the O2 box office.
There are also extra transport options in place for those worried about getting home after the late finish. There will be 2,000 extra car park places  available (that's about 4,000 in total), but these spaces should be pre-booked by phoning 020 8463 6718/020 8463 6709. There will also be a shuttle bus running back to Trafalgar Square as well as Thames Clipper boats running back to Waterloo via Canary Wharf and Tower Pier. The journey takes about 30 minutes.

*******************************************
Doors open at 8pm, the first bout is at 9.30pm, the Carl Johanneson-Kevin Mitchell bout is at 12.45am, with the big fight on at soon after 2am (when Showtime's coverage starts). Coverage on Setanta Sports 1 starts at 10.30pm, but they are running coverage of the pair's fights - including David Haye's win over Jean-Marc Mormeck and Enzo Maccarinelli's win over Wayne Braithwaite - before they begin broadcasting from the O2.

  • Ron Lewis fell in love with boxing after being taken to the Albert Hall to watch Dave 'Boy' Green as a nine-year-old. He wrote for Boxing News while at school and, after a career in local papers, climaxing with three years as group editor of the Hounslow Chronicle, he joined The Times in 2001, taking over boxing coverage in 2002.
