Froch looking for a new opponent
Rumours circulating are that Carl Froch is searching for another opponent for his WBC super-middleweight eliminator on May 10 after Denis Inkin, the Germany-based Russian, pulled out of the bout for a second time.
Inkin pulled out of the original March 29 date in Nottingham with "an acute infection" and I understand that he has withdrawn again.
I also understand that Alejandro Berrio, the former IBF champion from Colombia, is being lined up as a replacement. If this is correct, it is an excellent job by Froch's promoter Mick Hennessy.
Berrio, 31, won the vacant IBF title by beating Robert Stieglitz in March last year, after Joe Calzaghe vacated the belt rather than go through with an ordered defence against Stieglitz. Berrio lost the title to Lucian Bute in Montreal in his first defence, but is still rated No 10 in the WBC's rankings - Froch is No 1.
The bill at Nottingham Arena stands to challenge the Haye-Maccarinelli card as the best of the year. It also features Junior Witter's WBC light-welterweight title defence against Timothy Bradley, an unbeaten American, and the English lightweight title fight between John Murray and John Fewkes.
This is a fantastic bill of boxing. A shame the Froch v Inkin fight is off as I was looking forward to Froch getting a real test. Still, Bradley should be a reasonable test for Witter, apparently he's pretty technical and has decent speed. Murray v Fewkes should be very interesting, both young, both unbeaten, both contrasting styles. Fewkes likes to move and box, Murray tends to stalk his opponents and likes to let loose up close. Winner should get a crack at the British title.
