Pacino adds some Hollywood glamour
Hollywood came to Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas Strip yesterday when the movie 88 Minutes had its world premiere.
Planet Hollywood is the host for Saturday’s big fight between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins – the bout actually takes place at the Thomas & Mack Centre at the university – and added another big occasion to get people in the door and helping to talk about the fight. Al Pacino (left) showed up to walk the red carpet and even had a chat with Calzaghe and his dad, Enzo.
The hotel and casino is believed to have paid $11million to be the host venue, money it can’t realistically expect to recoup on this show.
However, it has made a big statement to the likes of the MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay – the big fights host hotels in the city. Robert Earl, Planet Hollywood’s boss, says the resort is in the boxing business for the long-term.
All credentialed media got an invitation to the screening and the after-show party, which Pacino skipped. But there were brief appearances by the film’s other stars, including the drop-dead gorgeous Alicia Witt. Unfortunately, the film, a thriller in which Pacino plays a psychiatrist whose testimony sends a killer to death row, really failed to hit the mark. Here’s hoping that Saturday night’s fight is better.
It's Al Pacino in character as Tom Jones , it's an Italian/Welsh thing .
