Williams back in America looking for a world title
Perhaps the most surprising development in Tampa this week was the sudden appearance of the bout sheet of Danny Williams, yes that Danny Williams! The heavyweight from Brixton will box a six-round contest against Marcus McGee on the undercard of the Clinton Woods-Antonio Tarver IBF light-heavyweight title bout at the St Pete Times Forum on Saturday and the British champion is confident he can still get to the top.
Williams has not boxed in the United States since 2004, when he knocked out Mike Tyson in Louisville in July and was battered by Vitali Klitschko in a WBC title challenge in Las Vegas in December. But he remains ambitious and James Toney recently turned down a big offer to face Williams in London.
"This is a fantastic opportunity and I have not changed my mind about getting back to the top again," Williams said. "Before I consider another crack at the world title, revenge is on my mind. I've suffered defeats to Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton and I want to face either of them next after my fight in America."
"Many things have happened in my career but I have no one to blame other than myself. There were times I got into the ring when I was not in the right condition. I boxed recently in Switzerland and was robbed of a win when the referee called the bout a no contest because of an injury to Oleg Platov.
"If I had been fitter the referee would not have stepped in because I would have knocked him out. I am weighing around 17-and-a-half stone - what I weighed when I knocked out Kali Meehan in one round and I feel great."
