The Suitcase Thief of Geneva
A few years back my wife and I were waiting in a Geneva hotel for a taxi to take us to the airport. We had left our bags in a small left luggage room and we noticed an untidy shaggy man disappearing inside. I was sent to check.
Moments later I returned, providing my wife with reassurance. "But he is still in there," she replied. "How can you be certain he isn't up to something?"
"Well," I said, "there are two reasons for my certainty. The first is that you sent me to check, I checked and everything was fine. The second is that the shaggy haired, untidy man is Tom Stoppard."
Arts and Letters Daily links to a first class profile of the Suitcase Thief of Geneva.

I'm surprised you didn't add the name of the journalist who wrote the piece to your occasional list of "Real People Who Are Actually Called..."
