I see he credits Gorbachev with ending the Cold War, presumably in the same way that Napoleon brought Waterloo to an end.

Using the label "Communist" for Gorbachev is about as instructive as calling Wilberforce a "Tory MP." Gorbachev presided over probably the most peaceful revolution in history, the dismantling of the Communist system of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. He has many faults, but is certainly less nationalist or bloodthirsty and more honest than either of his successors -- both products of the same Communist system of course.
