Watch George Galloway lose his temper, live on TV

I thought you might like to see some clips from my Sky debate last night with George Galloway. He does not, in Corporal Jones's immortal phrase, like it up him.

(Incidentally, the final vote was not 18-82 - they announced that after only 10 minutes of voting - voting went on and in the end the result was a rather more respectable 34-66)

Excellent, but still not quite as good as the classic clip of Galloway on election night in 2005.

I have Muslim websites I visit, and they LOVE Galloway. I'll probably see this clip on their sites too.

Posted by: Debbie | 16 Mar 2007 13:58:06

the facial hair, the tieless shirt and jacket, the endless declamatory shouting...galloway is morphing into saddam hussein

Posted by: Sir Winston | 16 Mar 2007 14:26:47

not only the facial hair etc. - his accent is pretty close, too.

Posted by: Volker | 16 Mar 2007 15:49:23

I love Galloway. The man is brilliant. What has he been wrong about in the middle east? If the world had listened to him 5 years ago, we'd be a lot better off.

I don't really think he lost his temper either. This is pretty much him, isn't it? He forcefully makes a point, is all..

Posted by: Matt the heathen | 16 Mar 2007 16:23:37

Are you Jewish then?

Posted by: Jim | 16 Mar 2007 18:38:18

Get over the hating Mr Galloway thing and do your blood pressure a favour. It's sooo passe anyway.

He's a great man and gives most of us a reason not to sink into a deep depression. Those of you that oppose him should examine your consciences and ask yourself what you really stand for.

Must dash, the Top Cat himself is on TalkSport right now - yippeeeee!

Ooh, just tuned in and heard him talking about just this topic and how he trashed Finkelstein's 'argument' and won the debate hands down by a vote of 82% to 18% - and from the typically right-wing Sky viewers too. Ha ha!

Posted by: Mary Allen | 16 Mar 2007 22:20:56

Please send George Galloway back to the U.S. for a little visit. Christopher Hitchens needs someone easy to debate again.

Posted by: robert meyer | 17 Mar 2007 00:21:56

You're right Matt. Galloway is brilliant, he didn't lose his temper, and I loved the way he conducted the whole debate while riding a flying pig.

Posted by: Ken Leyland | 17 Mar 2007 08:44:09

"What has he been wrong about in the middle east?"

Well I guess nothing, if you consider licking up to Saddam, Licking up to Bashir Al Assad and licking up to Hamas and Hezbollah to be laudable, as you evidently do. So you strongly agree with supporting tyrants in the middle east? It's a winning manifesto pledge, you should join Respect.

Posted by: Tj Hooker | 17 Mar 2007 09:08:48

Gorgeous George repeatedly refers to the thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands (take your pick) of Iraqis killed since the overthrow of Saddam. You have to pinch yourself to remember that the vast majority of these victims were slaughtered by the very people Gorgeous supports. Am I going mad or is he?

Posted by: Ken Leyland | 17 Mar 2007 13:07:03

It may be a more respectable vote but it is still two to one against.

Posted by: Sprey | 17 Mar 2007 13:41:23

I've heard a lot about Galloway but the man that he was debating against - nothing! And to my surprise, having visited "timesonline" for many years, he actually has a slot on this page.

Not only was Daniel's defense rather tame on the Sky News debate, he has actually posted this page which screams nothing short of a little child throwing out his toys after not getting what he wants.

Losing with grace is the best way of maintaining one's humility Sir. Pretty low that you had to compile tapes of Galloway 'losing' it - Grow up!! - I'm a 22 year saying this too.

"Incidentally", 18-82 and 34-66, whatever! You still lost and by a big margin. The latter result is still almost half as many votes that you got - and most importantly of all, it reflects the growing dissatisfaction amongst UK residents of the British Army and its involvement in Iraq.

Posted by: Saiful Ali | 17 Mar 2007 14:38:16

Daniel it takes a big man to admit he was so wrong about something that has turned out so disastrously. The Iraq war has turned out bad for the US, the UK, the west in general, the US's arab allies (namely Saudi Arabia and Egypt), most of Iraq's peoples. The only winner has been Iran. Therefore it has been a disaster even for Israel! as its arch enemy now dominates the region.

To deny this is to deny facts. For all intents and purposes, the whole project has been a fiasco. To deny deny such facts, is to bury ones head in the sand.

Harold Pinter is Jewish but he does
not support the state of Israel.
George Galloway did succeed in making Daniel Finkelstein look very
foolish indeed.

Posted by: Mark Young | 17 Mar 2007 22:51:44

Galloway is right. Cui bono? Answer: Israel

Posted by: Sinisa | 18 Mar 2007 00:39:31

Perhaps you might show some emninetly respectable footage of dead Iraqis, and rich oil-men. Very respectable. And Finkelstein actually considers speaking some words to Saddam Hussein a graver mistake than being directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in the wake of war-mongering. I don't have to have any great estimation for Galloway to know who is the real villain of the piece here. But ooh lets look at Galloway lose his temper cos that's teh real issue, isn't it? Death and misery just a television show after all once they happen far away.

Posted by: Andrew Keneally | 18 Mar 2007 01:31:29

Oh Daniel,
my breafast is going cold! I have never laughed so much so early in the morning.
Well done for not bowing to Galloway's hysterical onslaught trying deperately to defend the indefensable.
Equally funny were the panel of speakers looking terrified they might become embroiled, who needs comedy shows when we have this.

Posted by: John from Huntingdon | 18 Mar 2007 07:36:05

I didn't think George was unreasonable, you tried to make an issue out of being Jewish and he objected to that strongly and quite rightly. I'm no supporter of George but he came across far better

Posted by: adey | 18 Mar 2007 08:17:55

We need a few more like Galloway.
Not because I think he is right, but because I think he says what he thinks.
For far too many at Westminster being an MP is their job. They won't say anything controversial because it might damage their career prospects.

Posted by: jasper | 18 Mar 2007 12:40:25

Accept it Mr Ficklestein you were mauled by George and shown to be utterly out of your depth. hee hee.

Posted by: Nick Cohen | 18 Mar 2007 13:21:47

Oh god, I finally get to watch this only to hear tedious and baseless accusations of anti-semitism (you know full well that opposing Israel and opposing Jewish people are not the same - just as you know that there are plenty of Jewish people that oppose Israel in equal amounts. Yet you cannot ever admit these inconvenient truths otherwise you'd have to come up with some - perish the thought! - real arguments for your vile views). But it gets even worse and you show yourself up further with the ad-nauseum bringing up of Galloway's visit to Saddam Hussein. You really didn't have much in the way of an argument here, did you Daniel? Have you ever actually asked yourself what it is you stand for and why so many people would rather side with the arguments of the George Galloways of this world?

Posted by: John Baker | 18 Mar 2007 17:07:32

I'm Jewish. Disagree with Israel and you're an antisemite. I'm Jewish. Supporters of Arabs are anti-semites. I'm Jewish. My how the suffering of my people adds gravitas to my (frequently absurd) point of view. Did anyone notice I'm Jewish?
No one can accuse you of being original, Daniel. Keep playing the man, forget the ball.

Posted by: chris lines | 19 Mar 2007 12:59:54

I am afraid Daniel, you lost badly. You are always going to struggle against someone as articulate and fluent as Galloway, and such advantages allied to an infinitely more compelling case to make doomed you to defeat. He is a man of strong opinions, strongly felt and part of his charm lies in his not being mealy-mouthed. From where I was sitting I saw an individual who history has vindicated outclassing an apologist presenting a weak case, weakly.

Posted by: ian gregory | 20 Mar 2007 11:36:08

I'm no fan of George Galloway but he gave you the mauling IMHO.

His so called anger was based on passion for the issue, not on selling extra column inches or increasing circulation of a newspaper!

He was quite right to point out that you were attacking him instead of making a case for the issue. Your argument appeared to have been, "Don't vote for George's side cause he once sucked up to Saddam".... huh?!?

As other people have already pointed out, grow up and retrieve the dummy you've spat out across the blogsphere!!!

You know the pro-war lobby are in trouble when you get these sort of comments on a Murdoch site. Be afraid warmongers, be very afraid...

Posted by: Athena Murphy | 22 Mar 2007 21:35:33

daniel you need to be reminded that george galloway did not refer to you as a jew, he was not being anti semitic, so i dont understand why you brought this up during the debate, he was merely stating his view on the illegal entity that is the state of israel and his points were valid and many share his beliefs that israel is the oppressor, and ariel sharon was much more a murderous thug, than saddam hussein ever was, you couldnt compete and never stood a chance in debating againt such a knowledgeable and articulate man that is george galloway, you lost in the poll and need to wake up, george galloway is addressing the obvious

Posted by: obie khan | 26 Mar 2007 16:26:12

It hard to believe that a once renowned and respected Newspaper now employs journalist of the Finkelstein caliber.

Posted by: Anne Renard | 28 Mar 2007 19:31:18

brilliant program, the whole show is on youtube for anyone that missed it

i think you came over terribly, you seemed to sling unfounded personal accusations around mixed with rants about 'again with the jews' without dealing with the issues raised

if your the best the pro war lobby could muster, things are moving in the right direction

i'm not at all surprised you work for murdhoch ( re annes renard's comment ) its the ideal place for pro war chickens like you, spreading propaganda and obfuscation, supporting an illegal war that you wouldn't dream of signing up to yourself, or sending your own children to fight in, whilst you take home a nice pay big pay packet while hundreds of thousands die and millions more suffer

sickening
