I agree with Gerard Baker that Chris Matthews asked too many rather "personalized" quick-fire questions ("Would it be a good idea to have Bill Clinton back in the White House as first spouse?"--my paraphrase) and that nearly all the candidates fell back on their stump speeches, which by now sound rather canned. The kind of spontaneous thinking which emerges when candidates respond to the immediate situation at the same time that they draw on a wealth of experience and knowledge would elevate the debates.
