On hearing Gordon Brown promise to "try my utmost" a friend of Tony Blair commented dryly to me:

I think, then, that we can all agree that the whole thing will be trying

The same joke has occurred to the Bryan Appleyard, who suggests, insightfully, that trying your utmost isn't always a good thing.
