I think it's worth noting that the RealClear Politics piece has been quite heavily criticised and the argument seems to be contradicted by most of the actual polling evidence.
Furthermore, the O'Hanlon/Pollock piece, far from becoming the new wisdom, seems to have been taken to pieces by rather a lot of people and O'Hanlon at the very least seems to have started to equivocate over its conclusions.
Frankly, although there is some good news (of disputable significance) coming out of the surge, I think Barone is engaging in some wishful thinking.
