What Nick Clegg should be thinking about now

Nick_clegg

While he watches the coverage of Ming Campbell resigning, a thought bubble should be coming out of Nick Clegg's head.

How do I get rid of my immigration amnesty?

Although Nick is smart, personable and seized of the need to win the support of Tories, he needs to be careful not to get hooked on eccentric Liberal positions on Europe and immigration. He is vulnerable on both.

He has only just announced the amnesty policy, so it will be hard getting off the hook. But he desperately needs a formula to prevent him repeating it even once as leader or leadership candidate.

If Finkelstein doesn't agree with something he dismisses it as eccentric. No doubt he would have said the same about Liberla/Lib Dem green policies before the other parties started copying them. Not what I call thoughtful comment.

The truly eccentric proposition is that we should round up the nations million (plus or minus) illegal economic migrants and send em all back to where vey came frahm.

Can you imagine the effect on the economy this would have ?

The second most eccentric proposition is that we should ignore them and leave them to the tender mercies of people like traffickers and gang masters.

Tory MPs may, and do, squeal with laughter about the fate of the cockle pickers, but normal people have more respect for their fellow human beings than this.

It's only by facing facts and showing the sort of common sense that the media's bullied out of the other parties that the Libdems can get back on track.

Tell the truth and damn the consequences Nick. It's risky, but it's worth it !
