McCain appears to be winning here, thats pretty good. Hope he wins in the actual vote.

John McCain is pretty much the only Republican that I can tolerate.
Posted by: Shaun Walker | 5 Jan 2008 22:58:52
McCain's biggest problem is that he is perceived by a great number of Republicans to be more of a Democrat.
While that might be seen as a positive for the general election (being able to appeal to more voters) it basically means he'll never receive enough support in the primaries to get there.

If Ron Paul wins, he will not only make America a better place, he will make the world a safer place.
He is the only candidate who speaks truth, not spin, and he is the only candidates I have respect for.

I just finished watching the ABC debates, and ron paul is the only one to answer directly to the questions asked. I have been following Dr. Paul for a few years, read quite a few articles on why he believes that returning to our constitutional roots would restore our nation to its proud heritage. You can see the impact he is having on the presidential race. Now Huckster is trying to steal his platform of abolish the IRS, when the good Doctor said that in the first debate they laughed at him. How quickly we forget! But only Paul has a traceable and might I add impecable political voting record. He is often cited as having the best congressonal voting record, EVER! Look him up on the internet 800,000 videos to watch. There is nothing secret about him everything is above board and transparent. I encorage you to listen to him on Youtube from 1988, he is saying the same thing then as he is now. Un-flip-flopable Dr. Ron Paul. He was right then and is more relevent today as all his predictions have come to pass, or are coming to pass. So lets forget party loyalty for a change, lets forgo our personal contentions and pool our strength to get Dr. Ron Paul elected in 2008!

Mr. Mitt Romney is my choice. He has a never ending energy, talent and brilliance and can bring the clear message of change in Washington. A new kind of leadership that understands everyone's sentiment. He is an eclectic mixture of what the people need and want. I love his personal strength and virtue. A faithful husband and father that uses his own resources to further his cause. I wan to help him as much as I could.

Not quite Liberal, but I guess many Libertarians do err towards classical liberalism.
I do find that many people not sure about Libertarianism often become more committed to it once they read up more about the subject. I certainly did when I read Rothbards book "The ethics of Liberty" which is now free on mises.org, although I bought my copy from Amazon :-(
This must be bad news for Gordon Brown and David Cameron though. Neither of whom are in any way Libertarian. The Tories seem to be more centralist every day alas.

What's this? A principled liberal who wants to reverse the trend against personal liberty and the growth of the nanny state? I'm sure the Republican party will dispense with him in short order. Too bad.

Ron Paul stands head & shoulders above the rest, in his understanding of Constitutional & Common Law.
He can articulate the divide between what rights & duties are required of individual citizens & of the nation.
The essential challenge is, that most of us Americans have been 'dumbed down' by sound byte mentaltity, so that we struggle to follow the logic of his argument.
Also we may lack the fundamental moral underpinning - the capacity to assess our actions in light of the dual Principles of : 'reaping what you sow' and 'doing unto others as you would have them do unto you'.
The neoconservative impulse to build empire worldwide has taken advantage of this weakness.
What is the good of building an empire if it becomes oppressive domestically & abroad, as we've become ?
Our hope & prayer - literally, is that our vision can be restored.
To happen, it will require a miracle - restoration of our 'sight'. Dr. Paul is giving us the prescription -as no political figure has in years.
Both the nation & the church must reject shallow sloganeering in favor of deeper thinking & reasoning. We've got to re-learn the principles of Just War.
Dr. Paul is more of a [Christian] Statesman than we've seen in our lifetimes. He's very much in the mold of the Founding Fathers.
He's re-igniting the flame of Liberty & Truth in millions of Americans & many in the UK & across the world, even !
After a steady diet of calculating corrupt Pols like Clinton & Bush, Americans are hungry for truth.
I think many are desiring America to be a Righteous nation once again.
That would bless the whole world.

I like Fred. His laid back demeanor and quiet calm, and lodgical answers made sense to me.
He probably won't be the candidate though. I think Romney probably has the best chnce of defeating Hillary or Obama. Any of the others, especially McCain, and the Repubs are toast.
Posted by: BOB | 6 Jan 2008 15:50:23
The ABC debate provided Dr. Paul with more opportunity to state his views than all the other sham, highly controlled attempts to marginalize him on network television put together.
A decent, principled, non-wavering advocate for every freedom loving individual on this earth, whatever country they might be citizens of.
Imagine an America that minded it's own business and gave up pre-emptive war, sloganeering, arrogant interfering nanny state 'us against them' rhetoric and actions. It's not a lost dream, it's the one carried by Ron Paul and those who are willing to do their own thinking and take responsibility on a personal level for the quality of their life experience.
Shame on FOX News.

Enjoyed watching McCain squirm when Romney pinned the amnestier label firmly upon him by correctly identifying him with the Democrats'comprehensive plan to allow the millions here illegally to remain for their lifetimes. It was perhaps the only occasion when Romney's garrulousness served him well. To counter "sound bites", Romney has pioneered the sound gobble. He rambles on interminably to persuade the dimwits who believe the guy who talks most wins. This is the approach of the clucks who provide "opposing viewpoints" on the cable news networks. They rant on and on, without pausing, then interrupt another speaker after their monologues are finally halted. Gibson let Romney run the show. Thompson did much better sitting down. His witty play on Romney's declaration he "likes Man Dates" was a bit of comic relief which elicited laughs from all but the pompous Romney. Once again, the polite Ron Paul was the Forgotten Man, but what he said was sensible, precise, and statesmanlike. Unintentionally amusing was McCain's remark to the effect that if you want to see how health care in Europe works, look at Canada. McCain is on record stating US troops can remain in Iraq for 100 years, like the 60 years we've occupied Germany, Japan, and Korea. The debate format was an improvement, principally because it was about the CANDIDATES, not the goddam "moderators". Unfortunately, Gibson was too self-effacing. The fellow from WMUR asked good questions.

I didn't take part in the poll. It's from the London Times, so I figure that it should reflect what the Brits think.
I'm going to try to give you my impressions as a American. But you can take it with a grain of salt, because after all, I'm just a hillbilly farm-boy from Virginia.
Ron Paul wants to do the one thing that NONE of the other candidates want to do.
He wants to give up the Empire. He understands that, like the Brits of the late 1940's, in order for the country to retain it's democracy, it MUST sacrifice it's military hegemony. It cannot retain BOTH, because military hegemony and true liberty are mutually exclusive.
That's not to say that Congressman Paul doesn't understand military affairs. Indeed, he's perhaps the only one of the candidates who understands that you fight wars (preferably defensive), not only with bullets and blood, but with ECONOMIC might.
The United States is in a far more precarious position today economically, than it has ever been. ALL fiat money systems eventually fail for the same reason: over-inflation of the money supply. And Mr. Paul sees it coming, and has been speaking on the subject for about thirty years now. That's the main reason I support him.

Caroline, I think you are just attracted to Romney. Press the Mute button a second time to put the audio back on and listen - do you work for the Pharmacuetical companies that he defended? I'm from Massachusetts where he was Governor. Did you not hear the announcer say "I don't even have to say how many times you flip flopped".

FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.
During my time in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst, I personally served under both Presidents Carter and Reagan. Without argument, President Reagan was the best commander-in-chief a military person could ever have served under. Fred Thompson possesses the same qualities and vision as President Reagan in that he is strong on national defense and sees a dire need to secure our borders and control immigration.
I can think of no better person to lead this country and fix the problems we have. He is the only candidate from either party who has specific and detailed plans on border security and immigration reform; revitalization of America’s armed forces; saving and protecting Social Security; and tax relief and economic growth. These are detailed on his Web site at www.fred08.com . I challenge you to find any other candidate who has laid out specific plans to fix anything.
Fred Thompson has published his first principles, some of which are mentioned above. In addition to those, he strongly believes in individual liberty, personal responsibility, limited government, federalism, traditional American values, the rule of law and is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment — all concepts established during the birth of our country and documented in our Constitution.
Again, try to find any candidate who has laid out their plans to “fix” this country. You will find they all speak in vague and abstract terms on their plans.
For those who have heard Fred Thompson speak, you will usually hear him say that the Fred Thompson you see today is the same Fred Thompson you saw yesterday and is the same Fred Thompson you will see tomorrow. He stands by his principles and values and doesn’t shift his positions based on polls or public opinion; in other words, he doesn’t say what the voters want to hear just to get elected, but remains steadfast on his views and convictions.
During his time in the Senate he focused on three areas: to lower taxes, strengthen national security and expose waste in the federal government. Fred Thompson has foreign policy experience, having served as member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Senate Intelligence committees.
As chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, he opened the investigation in 1997 on the Chinese government’s attempt to influence American policies and elections, and this investigation identified connections with the Clinton administration (documented in the committee’s report).
As a member of the Finance Committee, he worked tirelessly to enact three major tax-cut bills. Fred Thompson remains steadfast and even though a person may not agree with all his views and he understands some may disagree with him, you can count on him to be consistent and unwavering.
Don’t be fooled by his laid back approach and what critics call his “laziness.” As a former assistant U.S. attorney, he earned a reputation as a tough prosecutor and he possesses the toughness this country needs in order to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s issues.
I ask that you take a hard look at what this country needs, then take a hard look at all the other candidates’ views, policies, their records and their track record on consistency. Fred Thompson possesses integrity, loyalty, commitment, energy and decisiveness, all traits of an effective leader, and will emerge as the best person to take this country boldly forward.
Please help Fred win in South Carolina:

Hooray ! After practically ignoring Ron Paul for entire duration of this process , perhaps this poll might encourage the Times to do a piece on the best politician the states has seen for decades . As it seems nothing else will . Lets hope this poll is reflected in reality ! Judging by the Times articles recently you wouldn't even know he was in the race . A sad indictment of where the Times has been heading lately .
FTR , we could use a Ron Paul or two over here too !
