Do the Kennedys really endorse Obama?
The headlines told the story of Obama's endorsement by the Kennedys, his taking the mantle of JFK. But it's all a bit more complicated than that.
You see, the Kennedy family is split.
So Ted Kennedy (JFK's brother) and Caroline Kennedy (JFK's daughter) are with Obama. As is Ted's son, Patrick Kennedy, a US Representative.
But the family of the Kennedy Obama really admires, Robert, are all over the place.
His widow Ethel Kennedy supports Obama. But those of his children who have expressed a preference - Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Bobby Jr, Kerry and Rory - all back Hillary.
It gets more tangled.
One of the reasons Ted Kennedy delayed his endorsement was that Christopher Dodd was still in the race. And Dodd is a close friend of the Kennedy family.
So Ted's sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver and a half-dozen other family members (including Timothy Shriver) put money on Dodd.
Perhaps now they will come in behind Obama too.
UPDATE: Rory Kennedy has now endorsed Obama in this article. My source for her backing Clinton was Politico on December 16th - usually a reliable source but this time wrong.

I don't see the controversy. Townsend and Bobby Jr. Endorsed Hillary early on before Hillary and Bill started strong arming the party by going against a pledge to not campaign in Florida and by giving the mantel of Civil Rights juggernaut to Johnson when that was all along a throne held King and the Kennedy's who supported the those ideals. This Clinton's have dishonored the party and should be disqualified for the Florida stunt. They have no shame or loyalty. They think they run the party. I love how the NYT reluctantly endorsed Clinton with a warning to her and then admonished her the next day for her Florida antics. I hope the Kennedy's make the difference and reclaim John and Bobby's legacy.

Historically, have someone who has had lost a presidential bid to endorse a current candidate is a bad omen. Loser has a loser's aura. So it is not auspicious to have John Kerry and Ted Kennedy to endorse you if you want to have a positive aura.

Who cares what the Kennedy's have to say? (Especially Teddy, the lady killer! We remember Mary Jo!!!)
Obama is another tax and spend liberal who would give the 20-35 million illegal aliens amnesty.
The U.S. cannot afford the nearly $1 trillion in new/enlarged programs Obama espouses.
JFK must be spinning in his grave.
Posted by: Calle | 29 Jan 2008 07:02:18
Who gives two hoots about Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Who?? How can she have any relevance whatsoever compared to Ted Kennedy and JFK's daughter Caroline???
The major endorsement of Ted Kennedy has already had the impact. Both Bill and Hillary will be REEELING from this. The wind has been taken right out of their sails, especially after the resounding win for Obama in SC which as it was stopped the Clintons in their tracks!
Ted Kennedy...that is a huge endorsement, especially as the Clintons realllllly wanted it, and were pleading with him to remain neutral if he felt he didn't need to give his endorsement. Well felt he did, and after the shenanigans and ill-fated mud slinging and fearmongering by the Clintons, quite frankly I don't see why anyone should continue to support them from here on. Just give it to Obama now, and stop embarassing yourselves. Especially John Edwards. What a joke.
Posted by: Colin Bowley | 29 Jan 2008 07:29:03
John Edwards, has a nice style, but lacks self confidence. He would looks best in a fashion show, and TV presenter role, I do not think Politics is his personality, Politics is a tough business, it ages you. by the Time Hillary finishes this campaign she will have aged 10 years. By the time she has served two years she would have aged 20 years, in 3 years time she will look 30 years older. I think John Edwards wants to be in this, but he wants to decide if he wants to be running mate with Obama or Hillary. But what he does not realise, Hillary perhaps don't want him, and Obama perhaps dont want him. Hillary and Obama is what I see, so which ever way Edwards is on a loser.

AGENDAS, AGENDAS, AGENDAS!
Ted Kennedy has some obvious personal reasons for endorsing Obama. She obviously beat him out for the New York Senate, and he just wants revenge... and then Caroline just pops up after all these years. hmmmmm, what could her agenda be....maybe being the first female president herself??? Seems like there are some pretty strong political agendas here... Just recently, Ted Kennedy did not even know Obama's name, he referred to him as "OSAMA HUSSEIN IRAQ BAMA" at a press conference, and now he is endorsing him!!!
Come on... What do we know about Obama?
His whole background is shady. There is just alot of talk from him but what backs it up...I mean he just came out of nowhere.

I've never seen such a weakly argued piece. The point, I think, concerned the Kennedys who matter - not the pet dogs and in-laws of the cousins of Ted Kennedy. Could Mr. Finkelstein be hoping to weaken the support for Obama by scraping the bottom of the barrel?

The endorsement of the Kennedys was timed before the Florida primary. It was supposed to be a showcase of how much difference they could make for Obama. The result was an insult to the Kennedys when Hillary easily trounced the Kennedys and Obama in the Florida primary - 50% to 33%. I am from California and am quite confident that the Kennedys expectation to sway us to Obama would be their biggest disappointment. Does Caroline want to be the running mate of Obama? It will make Ophra disappointed since she is aiming to be his running mate. The Kennedys are over the hill as far as Californians are concerned. They could even hurt the campaign of Obama since we want to show to the Nation that we really do not care for the Kennedys. Think about it, what have the Kennedys done to our country that is worth emulating? Except the womanizing of Ted including the rape committed by his nephew in Florida. Remember?

I think thye Clintons are really reflecting the mentality of the majority of that 'special' class of Americans. I have so much respect for Bill Clinton but his dirty tactics and racial mudslinging may have spoilt everything. He's only stressing what the 'Americans' think of Obama and not what the African-Americans think. Still an issue that we still have two types of citizens.

Even her husband doesn't respect her, how can we? Tolerating that kind of abuse from a spouse, what does she teach our daughters and husbands? She is the D-list Kennedy that got her rear whipped in the Maryland gubernatorial election.
In a state that is overwhelmingly Democratic, the citizens chose a Republican (Erlich) instead of her. That speaks volumes of her abilities, skills, and judgment.
The only Kennedy endorsements that count are Teddy's and "Sweet" Caroline's. And they chose the best candidate:

The argument that Barack’s not going to be an agent of change because he’s working with the existing politicians misses the point (and what history teaches us).
People who have created great change have always used the system. Consider Ghandi and Martin Luther King. They worked with what they had in a much more difficult system -- they were truly beaten down and oppressed and yet still able to lead. I believe Barack will do much the same in a terrifically more potent position. No one person (outside of a dictator) ever does it on his/her own. Barack understands this intimately and that’s why he consistently works toward bringing people together. He understands the idea of 10,000 fingers lifting at once versus an Atlas-like model (where an individual tries to bear the load of the world on his/her shoulders).
We don’t need a superhero. We need a pragmatic, energetic and dynamic communicator who will inspire others to do their best for the common good.
Barack knows he doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel. He’s simply has to take the pieces that exist and reconfigure them to work better as a whole.

After reading these comments I am convinced that Americans have not done their homework. So many of these comments are bold and brash but hold not real substance. I am a Hilary supporter and have done my homework. Hillary's experience is one of toughness. I fail to see how anyone can say loyalty is a sign of weakness. Even in High School she was a stateswoman (when women did not have a voice. Look at her record in college and in her youth. She spent plenty of time investigating both Republicans and Democrats and even had to stand up to her father for her political convictions (Have your read her books?) She has always been a staunch supporter of affordable health care and women's rights. Her history bears this out. She has also fought for the working man and her investigation of the current housing debacle in legendary. Do your homework America. Stop being so polarized and look at the issues and the experience of the candidates. Obama may have the Kennedy vote but we are not sheep to be so easily influenced by "Big Names"
And listen to what the candidates are saying. Is there any substance to their rhetoric? All politicians look for the chink in the armor of the others. If all you pay attention to is the twisting of statements, how will you ever learn to see the truth? Again, I say, "America, do your homework. Look beyond the obvious and get over your prejudice. Learn about the issues and choose the candidate who understands how governments and finances work then cast your vote." I have done my homework and Hillary is the only one of all the candidates, Republican or Democrat who has the smarts, the guts, the chutzpah and the unadulterated experience to handle the job and do it right.
PS And while you are at it, learn to spell or at least use your spell checker.

As a Canadian, I am very perplexed by what is happening in the U.S. election campaign. During the last two elections, the American public was fooled twice by empty rhetoric and promises, and rewarded with an incompetence and irresponsibility which has affected the entire world negatively. It is time for Americans to reclaim their global reputation as a progressive and truly democratic society.
While any of the candidates (Republican or Democrat) would be an improvement over Mr. Bush, I hope that the electorate dig deep into the rhetoric this time. Mr. Obama is a great orator, but to date, he hasn’t done a very good job of articulating the details of his “change” plan. Just saying he will make these changes is not enough. Hard questions must be asked about how he plans to do this. Americans shouldn’t settle for vagaries. It’s time to demand details.
While Mrs. Clinton has a Washington history, this shouldn’t be discounted or considered a negative. America has some serious problems and she has demonstrated the ability to be tough and thoughtful. You will need someone who can hit the ground running in January. I am also perplexed by America’s and the media’s endless cruelty when reporting on Mrs. Clinton. Clearly, she is dammed no matter which way she turns. It would appear gender is a bigger issue than race in this contest.
You have the opportunity to make history by electing the first black man or the first woman. Either way you will be in a better position than you are today. However, don’t believe everything you read or hear in the media. Don’t allow yourself to be carried away by the rhetoric. Really dig deep to find out the details of your candidates’ plans. They will impact you for the next four years.

I am an American, and here is my homework on the subject:
First, Hillary Clinton has had her name on the ticket only as a senator. As first lady and as a governor's wife she has experience on the campaign trail. She may even have acted in some capacity as an advisor to her husband, but the bottom line is that her actual experience as being the one actually in public office and forming policy is not much more than Obama's. (Americans elected BILL Clinton as president, not HILLARY, and it was his final decisions that led to policy.)
Second, Hillary's record as a senator is telling...especially when thought of in regards to Iraq and the Patriot Act. She has had multiple opportunities to block the war (including the big decision to begin it) and each time she choked. Of those in the Senate, it is equally telling that Ted Kennedy voted "nay" on the first Iraq resolution, "nay" on the Patriot Act, and has been ceaselessly screaming about it all on the Senate floor ever since. The only thing Hillary and Ted seem to come together on publicly is on healthcare, and the craziness of the current system
Third, Obama's record (though shorter) is one of consistent anti-war rhetoric. His record as a lawyer is very good (and far less suspicious,) his work at the Harvard Law Review is commendable, and as a younger man he campaigned against Apartheid...grassroots style. His record in my eyes highlights that experience is no substitute for good judgment. (It is something he and Ted see eye-to-eye on much more than Hillary.)
As for the Kennedys, it is a smart political move: Ted has lots of connections to labor unions (a lot of working class folk belong to them) and this could help Obama in a few states. Caroline is the sole surviving member of JFK's branch of the family: she NEVER campaigns and to see her out like this is, for some voters, like watching Boo Radley emerge from his house. These are the two most famous names in the Kennedy clan, the ones who get the most press. That translates to POWER. Whatever happens next, it's going to get bumpier!

Discord that has been creeping up between them slowly for personal reason.
Some of us even if we don`t side with Ted Kennedy often this time he has ally, because historicaly the Kennedy gave to America(even with their life) much more than the Clinton`s ever will in eternity.
The Clinton`s are about what can America give me JFK&CO.was all about "What can i do for my country firs,t before it gives to me"

Me thinks that Ted and Caroline are planning -- in the future-- to run one of their children for president. Elitist do not do something for nothing and that's why they endorsed Mr. Obama. I have wised up to how this is done--nothing from the goodness of the heart.

It is insulting to the Kennedy family to say their endorsement comes with strings. Their legacy is one of serving their country. No, they are not perfect. Some members of the family have behaved badly and others have made mistakes, as have most of us. Their mistakes are just reported for the whole world to judge. And, like many families, they are divided in their support between two candidates. None of us should vote for either Obama or Clinton just because someone else is doing so. But certainly it matters that someone who spent his life in government thinks Obama can do the job.
I am a democrat who has had trouble deciding who to vote for, but I am so proud that our party has two such capable candidates. Rather than criticize each other, we should be proud that two such capable people from which to choose. Either candidate, if elected, will make history. So, make an educated decision and go vote for one of them.

Hello,
I really am a Hillary Clinton supporter. There are so many problems our Country is facing after George Bush, as our President.
Senator Clinton is bright, articulate and most of all has experience and a plan!
Senator Obama, has a bit of baggage with his involvement with Tony Rezko. He needs to be honest and direct with the American people regarding this 17 year friendship. I value honesty, and forthrightness in my family, friends and especially our leaders.
If Senator Obama believes this will just go away and if he can win the Democratic nomination for President... He could, but this will most certainly follow him through out the campaign and could very well cost him the election.

Between two evils, it's always better to choose the lesser one! Clinton and Obama from the arguement I have read here and elsewhere are good and bad depending on who one supports. But I must tell you, I have followed the two leading contenders for a long time to know that wisdom doesn't come with age but is a gift. Even though H.Clinton is a good politician (more of the time relying on the ability of her husband), B.Obama possesses the wisdom and character it takes to lead the American people and to a larger extent the world. Obama isn't just from America, he is a world citizen. Americans should elect for us a president that can lead the whole world. They shouldn't sacrifice the unity of the whole world on the altar of the Clintons. Obama is a global candidate. I see United Nations (U.N) in him.

To become good president there are tough choices to be made. You make them based on the information you are given and sometimes that information changes as new info comes in. We don't know how Obama would have vote he was not in th Senate at the time The President does not get to vote PRESENT it is either yes or no. The President does not always do the popular thing. A President also has a good network in order to get the right thing done.
We have spent the past 7 years with a President who has destroyed this wonderful country by doing the greedy thing & never the right thing.
This Country is a mess and the only person runny for President that has the strength and the network needed to fix these issues is Hillary. I am looking forward to the day I can say Madam President.

I find all this extremely funny.. I would think Brits - Europeans would be for Barack Obama. Regardless of how you feel about Ted Kennedy if you are running for office you accept his endorsement. Even if you do not agree with his politics. Not accepting would do more damage to your campaign then doing so.
I think that if we allow the Clintons to win the nomination then most likely we will have another republican President because she has so many skeletons in her closet that the GOP would make short work of her.
And if that happens the world will miss the chance of having a Great Leader and a great person as President of the USA.
Mitt Romney or John McCain will not lead this country to where it needs to be.
And I thought people where smarter than this..

If Hillary Clinton is elected, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be elected to her Senate seat (the same one formerly held by his father)--or so he schemes. That's why RFK Jr. and his sister, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, support Clinton, to move her up and out of the way of his lame ambitions. There is nothing in it for Teddy, and Caroline has never endorsed any candidate. Their relatively selfless endorsement of Obama is 100 times more impressive than the tainted tilt of RFK Jr. They have signed on to the very difficult task of blocking the Clintons from a return to the White House, because Obama says, "Yes, we can."

Who cares what the Kennedys think! America, think for yourselves and vote for someone who will uphold the Constitution. We need a leader who won't play political games or bow to political correctness.
Is there anyone genuine out there? Yes, the real Americans who work hard every day, follow the law, give their time and money to help others, and live the American dream.
Anyone else tired of the "ivory tower" leaders in this nation who either 1. Care only about keeping their power and/or 2. Are so out of touch with real life in America?
I am! Think for yourselves, America! You know what is right. Hang in there! United we stand, divided we fall. Many in leadership want us divided-don't let this happen! Even though we may disagree on some or all issues, I respect your right to believe what you believe and will defend your right to believe it!
May God Bless You, dear fellow American!

Rory Kennedy supports Obama...Read article below...

Rory Kennedy: Two fine choices, one clear decision - Obama
Rory Kennedy
Last Monday, I was very moved to see my uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, and my
cousin, Caroline Kennedy, publicly endorse Sen. Barack Obama. I thought
their statements of support were brave, intelligent and responsible. Given
the importance of this election, and the remarkable strength of our
candidates, it's not an easy decision for anyone looking to cast a vote
for a new direction in this country.
Sen. Hillary Clinton is a truly remarkable leader. She has given an
enormous amount to our country as a public servant and to my family as a
friend. Not only does she stand ready to be president, but she would be
the first woman to hold the highest office in the land.
All that makes her very appealing. As a woman, a mother, and feminist, I
can fully appreciate the symbolic power of a woman in the Oval Office. I
have dedicated my life to making documentaries, many of which focus on
women's issues. I would love to have my daughters see a female president
in our lifetimes. And still, that is not enough of a reason for me to vote
for Senator Clinton.
I empathize with Senator Clinton. In her run for president, she has been
forced to walk a difficult line. She is scrutinized not only for her
political positions, but also for her clothing, hair and make-up. When she
is tough, she is called cold, when she is emotional, she is labeled weak.
It can't be easy. I have an enormous amount of respect for the way she has
handled this near-impossible balancing act. And still, that is not enough
of a reason for me to vote for her.
I am concerned about women getting equal pay for equal work and breaking
through the glass ceiling. I care about policies regarding health and
education, issues that affect me personally. I have no doubt of Senator
Clinton's commitment to these issues. And still, that is not enough of a
reason for me to vote for her.
Times are far too dark, the price of failure too steep and the road ahead
too perilous for us to vote on identity politics. I would love to see a
woman be president. I would love to see an African American be president.
But right now, what I would love most is to elect the best person for the
job.
I believe that person is Sen. Barack Obama. As a leader, he has inspired
generations of Americans to look beyond reductive categories like gender
or race. Instead, he calls on us to think past our own individual
interests, to envision a world that is better for every person in it.
Like Senator Clinton, I have no doubt of Senator Obama's commitment to the
issues I care about. But, his unique ability to unify this country and
transcend partisan gridlock means that we can finally get something done.
In my years making documentaries, I have traveled to remote regions, from
small villages in South America, to townships in South Africa, to the
hollows of Appalachia. Every trip, every film, I meet people who still
keep photographs of my family on their walls. They cry when they meet me,
simply because they were touched by my father, Robert Kennedy. In part,
this is because my father supported policies and legislation that helped
the disenfranchised. But it is also, and perhaps more importantly, because
they felt that my father understood their pain. Senator Obama has that
quality too. He has an open heart and an energizing spirit.
Recently, my mother, Ethel Kennedy, said of Obama: "I think he feels it.
He feels it just like Bobby did. He has the passion in his heart. He's not
selling you. It's just him."
I agree. Obama is a genuine leader. We Americans - women included -
desperately need that kind of leader now. Not a president of a particular
gender or a specific race, but a president with a different vision, one
who inspires a sense of hope.
To elect Barack Obama is to choose a new direction, set a new course - to
steer America toward a better place, better for women as well as men,
better for us all.
Rory Kennedy, a documentary filmmaker, won an Emmy for her production and
direction of "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib."

I'm not sure why Caroline Kennedy's endorsement is important. Ted Kennedy represents the 'Old Guard', the Status Quo---old politics. Why is this endorsement important to Obama---afterall, he is claiming Change, and NEW politics.... sounds like something isn't jiving here!
Regardless, Ted and Caroline can't bring back Camelot. Caroline isn't anyone special---rather arrogant for her to think she is(Will someone please tell me what office she holds?) and Ted.. Well, he's another Senator that has been around along time: Just the person to show Obama the ropes! Wasn't that one of Obama's complaints...?
Methinks the Kennedys are outdated...

it's painfully clear from the comments that the respondents are either wide-eyed youngsters or elders with bad memories. An endoresment from the Kennedy clan is nothing to brag about...God forbid we have another womanizing druggie who almost got us blown up during the Bay of Pigs missle crisis. The Clintons are constantly criticized for their tactics...well at least they are out in the open about their machinations and pressure tactics. Kennedy's gang did their dirty work in smoke-filled back rooms in secret. That's scary!
Posted by: debb | 3 Feb 2008 07:04:58
I don't see why anyone would want the endorsement of the Kennedy family. After all, there is more than suggestion that JFK 'won' in 1960 because of his father's 'influence' with certain sectors of the Amercian community. Then there is the question of the president's morality whilst in office, and the fact that many believed that the family was in some way 'cursed'. Hence the two assassinations and the 1969 debacle at Chappaquidick for Edward Kennedy. This is the same man who seems to believe that giving his imprimatur to Obama is in some way doing him a favour. I guess Ms Clinton will survive without the support of the Kennedys, and Senator McCain will be rubbing his hands with glee.

William said on Jan 29, 2008 at 2:16pm--
"'Tax and Spend' is a description of how government OUGHT to work, not a criticism."
Well, I say--
Spoken like a true pro-communist socialist, Bill. As big a government as possible, a subdued, dependant, and controlled people (except you, of course), enforced mediocrity (except you, of course), contempt for the general public (except yourself, of course), propagandized children (except yours, of course), and everybody (except you, of course) EQUALLY poor.
The "people" living to serve the government.
Yippee!! Sounds grand.

What--am I supposed to change who I vote for based on the Kennedy preferences? Does anyone other than the Kennedys think this article is important?

People who vote for Obama will be making the same error in those who voted for Kerry. He is unelectable. He also is a novice. Can't debate to save his life. He talks alot of Bull. I am sure many people will only vote for him because he's "cute" or because they feel they owe it to the black race to correct injustices of the past-but these are frivolous, poorly conceived decisions that have no merit. Obama would make a fine Vice-President to Hillary who has debated circles around Obama and actually has a record of "Change"-and yes experience DOES count over inspiration. Hillary Will win the nomination. Ted Kennedy who has a dirty sordid past will actually have hampered Obama's campaign in the end. Obama DOES NOT deserve this based on his color, gender-feeling sorry for him. He acted like a big baby during the debates totally outclassed, outmatched by Hillary. Hillary is the best choice. Let us not make another nomination mistake that will come back to haunt us like never before. CLINTON/OBAMA 2008!

Call him a tax a spend liberal all you want. The real fact is that label really belongs to George W Bush and Dick Cheney. Obama is a throwback to the good old days. The 44th president
Barack H. Obama

Obama won't win, his style is arrogant, he plays up being black to black crowds, but then says "this isn't about race." If anyone can poke fingers at Clinton, then they have to at him. He never knew his father, his father ran off when Obama was 2. Obama grew up with his white mommy in a nice upper middle class Hawaii. Far removed from black poverty in the Carolinas or anywhere else. The Obama fairytale is that he came up from nothing. More troubling is the Oprah camp wish to promote someone who is black, not on policies, cause until recently he didn't have many, but just vote for him cause he's black. He's in reality as black as I am, and frankly it's stupid and racist just to vote for his colour. Everyone is too scared to even bring this up - Obama is a media creation that tries to straddle both white and black worlds. Sadly, we need a president that treats both worlds as one - and so it can't be Obama. As for Kennedy clan endorsements - isn't Obama wanting to get rid of the past? How can he say that with Ted in every photo call?

As a conservative independent voter, i am moved to distractions about these arguments for the democratic presidential nomination. Firstly neither one of candidates have reveal any plans for their administration. Hillary touts her experience and Obama sells his vision. When have you heard anything remotely describing what the plan is? So stop with the crap talking about he just gives inspirational speeches.. they both do.
I think it is good for you democrats to see the Clinton machine turned on Obama, you are seeing what we see. Like Carl Rove, they are politicians, working to become president at all cost. Obama polices are no more divergent from the "big Paternal government" kool aid that all Democrats preaches and drinks,so what is the difference?
This is what happens when you are in a party which bases everything on polices such as race, sex, sexual orientation and physical abilities instead of principles. When challenged this organization implodes or simply like crabs in a bucket each faction refuses to support the other and defeat is guaranteed. I again have no real choice .. except Ron Paul.

Who cares about Ted Kennedy? He has run for President himself before and lost miserably. He is directly responsible for the death of another person many years ago. He is identified with the far left liberal wing of the Democrat party. He has been in alcohol treatment and rehab multiple times. A liberal hasn't been elected President in 48 years. Why are you Brits so smitten with Ted Kennedy? I'll tell you what, we'll trade you him for Tony Blair, how about that?

It is nice to see the interest in our election from across the pond (with minor exception in the comments above). I would like to speak here, first on the topic of the piece we are commenting on (the Kennedy endorsements), then to several erroneous statements made in people's comments.
First,to Joan who gave me one of the biggest laughs of the day when she said Hillary beat Ted in a race for the NY State Senate - Joan, you apparantly are new to the political arena - Senator Kennedy has represented Massachusetts for 46 years!!! and despite the many troubles and tragedies of the Kennedy clan (based on what I read here, most of you might be getting all you know about the Kennedys from your infamous tabloids), the entire family has given years of public service to this country in different ways. Ted Kennedy is the only reason things are not even worse here following the last two administrations. As to questioning Caroline's relevance, or intentions and askiing what she is doing supporting someone she doesn't even know, again, you do not know what you are talking about. Caroline began her selection of a candidate last summer when she took all her kids to hear ALL the candidates, and she has heard several several times. There are, of course, the two books Obama has written, as well as his record of public service - to address the statement that he came out of nowhere, his background is shady LOL again! He graduated from Harvard, worked as a community organizer, then civil rights attorney before spending 8 years in the Illinois state Senate, before his tenure in the US Senate - I'd say we know a little bit about hime.
As to Senator Obama having no substance - go to his website, or, just watch the debate from last Thursday where Hillary agrees that all of their proposals are 95% the same (she won't give a date for getting troops out; she will force everyone to pay for healthcare; etc)
briefly on some other errors:
--so to spend a trillion here at home would be so bad, as opposed to the 4 to 5 trillion dollar debt Bush put us in (we had a 0 deficit at the beginning of his term)
--Obama spent 5 hrs one summer working for a firm that represented Rezko. He has donated all the funds his campaign rec'd from rezko or his affiliates to charity. Hillary has not!
-- Ted Kennedy did not intend to try to influence the Florida primary. all candidates had agreed not to campaign there - they have no delegates to send to the convention as they are being punished for ignoring primary rules (wouldn't know that from Hillary's appeals to them on tv) Hillary won there from simple name recognition and her usual shady tactics that essentially had her pandering to Florida voters in the days leading up to the primary
I am a 49 year old white female from New York. I have a BA in political science and masters in public policy but have shunned politics since the debacle that was our election in 2000. For the first time in my life, i am putting up a yard sign, a bumper sticker, making calls, going to rallies. Anybody who doesn't get what Obama can do for this country, or for the world, is not listening very well. And Ted, Caroline, Patrick, Rory and (as of yesterday) Ethel Kennedy (Robert's widow - mother to the two lost Kennedy's in Hillary's camp) can and should do all they can to help him get elected!
YES WE CAN!
PS If you haven't yet heard of the new "yes we can" video by will.i.am etal, check it out on youtube and see if that stirs you!

This topic is about 1 thing only, the best Dem candidate. I unreservedly back Obama. There is no comparison between the 2 would-be's. Obama brings a new freshness, a wholesomeness, and youth to a Dem party in danger of perishing from senility, both in terms of physical age, as well as having obsolete ideas. Hillary is too old, she belongs in the 90's. She's hopelessly locked into the:"we hate the GOP" Mantra too. A true leader of this millenium will be a uniter rather than emit the odious divisiveness radiated by Clinton. She is the most polarising figure in US politics. She has fans, yes, mainly among the 65+'s and feminists. The former are old WJC supporters, mired hopelessly in the past, while the latter support her for her gender, which is quite pathetic! Thats not a sound reason to use as a basis for this election. Predictably, Clinton points to her "experience", but that fake quality melts like snow in the sun in her case, when scrutinized. Reduced to essentials, Clinton is no more than an ex-presidents wife, with a law degree. Her only political office is the "soft" senate seat she was given in 2000, without having to really fight for it. It showed her in a bad light when the going got rough in Iowa. This is her very first real campaign and it showed! She has zero political experience of relevance to this campaign, thats the truth. And every time she opens her mouth to say: "I hate Bush", or " Bush is to blame for all our ills", she reinforces her lack of experience! Sorry, but professing to hate and denigrating the incumbent president is no qualification for office. Her campaign reeks of the Clinton campaigns in the 90's. Those were based on odious negative assaults on the opponents, rather than on whatever Clinton thought he offered. Finally, she is a liar, just as her spouse is. When she denies that she voted for the Iraq war, she lies! She did, and she can't fudge it either, its on record. Clinton is an opportunist, like Bill. Changes opinions whenever she senses the voters don't like her current views. Barack Obama carries none of the above baggage! He "calls it as he sees it", and one must respect him for that. The man has principles. Thats a quality neither Clinton even acknowledges let alone espouses! They wouldnt recognize a principle if it hit them in the face. Lack of scruples is rather their hallmark. I support Obama, every time.

I feel change in the air.Obama for America!
Out with the old divisive politics embraced by the Clintons which results in gridlock in congress. In with Obama and the new politics of building bipartisan coalitions to get things done for the American people.
Mrs Clinton touts 35 questionable years of experience including her 16 years as Arkansas first lady and First lady of the Clinton era. What is 'experience'if you cannot get things done due to deep divisions which she fosters.
She is not electable in November as up to 47% of the country hate her.Her recent gutter politics on Obama will add to that percentage.
I hope more and more people see the light of day
Hillary's claim to "35 years of experience." Subtract her years spent as first lady of Arkansas and in the White House, and her time working as a lawyer in the Rose Law Firm and in other jobs. As Reason Magazine's Steve Chapman reported in November, Hillary Clinton has "just under eight years of experience in elective office -- one more than John Edwards and four fewer than Obama." And, to boot, Hillary the Feminist has her man to fight her battles.
Here's a great quote from a NYTimes column by Gail Collins:
====
Hillary could start by purging her campaign of the lingering sense that the presidency is her due and anyone who stands in her way is a particularly mean chauvinist. You cannot run a campaign with the slogan: “Vote for Hillary — Think of All She’s Been Through.”

Most of you are missing the point about the Obama campaign, and the value of the Kennedy endorsements, especially Ted Kennedy and Caroline. Here it is: To my knowledge, Caroline has never come out and actively campaigned for any candidate, and while Ted has, the meaning of this endorsement is more symbolic than anything else. Yes, what we now know about John F Kennedy tends to blur the special light we reserve for those among us who are truly special, the Kennedy endorsement nonetheless reminds those of us who were there during those times that politics can speak of hope to a new generation and that the greater potentiality of the individual to shape their destiny can be realized only when the policies of the government is shaped by the will of the people, not when their will is bent to serve the agenda of those who wield power.

Yes there are alot of us conservatives in the US willing to give Obama a chance. But not Hillary. She is America's "ex-wife". Been there, done that. Not again. Time to end this dynastic seesaw, its getting really stale.
It's either McCain or Obama.
One need remember, they can say alot on the way to the white house, but delivery is much more difficult, and its not Britian, he doesn't control the money or the rules; he just talks and enforces.
If Obama can talk about Reagan politely, I can vote for him.

The Kennedys are not what the general press contrives by a long shot.To say Obama is in the JFK mold is ludicrous.JFK was an Economic Conservative. He expanded the US presence in Vietnam, setting up the war to follow. He had served in the military.Obama has not.Obama is a tool for George Soros and now the Kennedy faction. He is not nearly as good-looking.He hasn't any ideas,or
solid programs, or solutions to what he perceives to be changed. He has never accomplished anything in his two years in the Senate, and little prior .He has so little experience, one can only wonder from where he obtains the nerve to run for President - and during a time of war.He even voted against funding the military while our troops are on the frontlines, fighting and dying. He belongs to a racist church that hates Whites and Jews.
This is a good lesson in how the media and a few wealthy suppoters can try to create a President out of a hollow vessel. Say anything you want about him, i.e. 'he is charismatic, brilliant, etc.' just don't raise his non-record, or negatives.
Possibly, The Times could do a report on the role of George Soros
who has been backing Obama, and was behind the campaign finace bill, known as the McCain-Finegold Bill, which was crafted for him to be able to set-up what is known as 527's to create vehicles to
influence those in government and public opinion. Reportedly, Soros all but wrote the bill in toto. These two carried his water. It has also served to deny free speech during a campaign's last weeks.
Soros is behind the La Raza organization, which is demanding amnesty for illegals.Soros has been pushing for legalizing dope, especially marijuana, because he owns a tremendous amount of property in Latin America, or S.America, on which he raises, reportedly, such
'products.'
His association with Hillary is also suspect, and should be checked.
He is behind a one world type government as well.
Check-out Frontpagemag.com and its Discover the Networks. The book, "The Shadow Government" is most informative, but thoroughly researched.Soros is someone that should not be ignored. He is a dangerous, vindictive megalomaniac by anyone's standards.Don't believe me, though. Please, check all of this out for yourself. The one thing you have to understand is that unless one is born in the US, one cannot be President of the US.That is one obstacle Soros can never overcome.

Americans, what is wrong with you? We have a proverb here that translates "Those who forget the values of their elders bring disaster on themselves" NO ONE – yes, you inclusive, is free of blemish or blame, FINISHED. I believe it was one of your presidents that said "For better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered with failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat!" Precisely why we are even discussing the Kennedy “dynasty”, the ultimate American family; believe, believe, believe.......
As for support for Sen. Barak Obama, if you do not like him let him be, if you are intelligent read his book and website then make up your mind (on the issues). If Sen. Hillary R. D. Clinton fits your bill (no pun intended) be happy she did not get the endowment of people you despise since she has your endowment.

We had enough trubbles with Clinton(s). Who can trust to the family that lied under oath, dissrespected highest office. As a matter of fact, Clintons act and live as Republicans, but only pretend to be Democrates. Go for changes Obama and propose ticket with J. Kerry!

Who's surprised here? While everyone is spazzing out over Hillary, along comes slick-as-a-snake Barrack (HUSSEIN) Obama, who is every bit the poison pill Hillary is. The only difference between the two is that Hillary is a known quantity and Obama is a sleeper. To me, this makes him MORE dangerous. If my state allowed Republican voters to vote in the Democrat primary, I'd cast a vote for Queen Hillary, because she IS a known quantity, one that can truly be sent packing come November.
Hate to say this, but Obama WILL be our next President. Bend over, and grab the family jewels along with your wallet. Uncle Mike has spoken.
By the way, when was the last time a decent conservative/constitutionalist cared a rat's rear end about a Kennedy endorsement? I doubt Mary Joe Kopechne would lend that family a vote, were she still around.Skunks, every one. Bush can't hold a candle.

Teddy Kennedy is an alcoholic slum lord, his son Patrick is a drug addict who only pretends to be in recovery. He's been spotted in Rhode Island with a silver straw up his nose. Caroline spent her over pampered life lolling about in an ivory tower. She and her cousin "Maria" are anorexic freaks. None of them live up to the reputation set by RFK, even his children are little more than trustifarian mooches.
They are all trash, and of course like trash don't connect to the people or with the issues. Thus their willingness to endorse corporate whores like Obama and Clinton.
This lifelong democrat will vote republican, as long as the candidate isn't McCain. If it is McCain, I'll join many others in writing in a candidate or voting independent.

As a English resident, detached from this election, i was young enough to be inspired by JFK when he served his country and far more mature when saddened by the immense harm Mrs Thatcher did to our country. Wisdom now beckons me to side with Mrs Clinton, she is certainly far more talented than Thatcher ever was while the nearest Obarak gets to JFK is his crass attempts to copy the great politicians style of rhetoric.Clinton will restore world faith in American politics, something badly destroyed by the current incumbant. Obarak plays with words and sadly plays the race card. Britain respected the excellent achievements of Bill Clinton, a clever President. It would serve your Country well having Bill offering his advise to the first woman President, indeed it will serve America well on the world stage.

Think for a second or minute,....What policy is Obama known for? mmmmmmmmmmmmm Don't be mislead with what you hear. Bush was a mistake. Lets not make a mistake again, fellow citizens. I am not saying that Obama isn't a good man, but we need someone to lead and stand up strong to those that do not want change. We need someone who will not shy or scare away from the challenges that will be faced. Politics itself is not a pretty thing. Its not about people listening to you and changing their mind for the pretty words said. It's about rolling your sleeves and sticking with the issues. Being a hard ass, at times, who fights to the end. Remember that we need a leader, a do-er, a in your face person who will make everything possible to do the right thing. We need someone who will at times disagree and not be afraid to say things that can be unpopular. Think, not only for yourself, but for those who are in desperate need of change. Everyone needs to be counted from the very young to the very old. If you want unity and togetherness we need to include everyone in the plan.
Research, Research, Research, your candidates.....Look at the policies and how many times they've actually voted. You will be surprised. You can only think outside your box when you start looking at the issues and the history that actually makes the person. We can't afford to sacrifice our lower and middle class for a moment. Stop looking at the pretty face and the sweet words. Look at the actions.........

This if for the Brit who commented above. Why do the Brit's care about Kennedys and try to copy Americans? I think the Kennedy's should just move over to Britian. All the Libs over here just love love love the Europeans. So I say, just go go go.
I admire the culture and the better architecture of the Europeans, but I don't want the nanny state. My ancestors were Italian, but the Italians sucked the financial life out of my family with the taxes, read property confiscation, and love of Socialism.
Enjoy the Kennedy's Brits I don't want them.
