New attack ad for Obama

Phone

Dick Morris, former Clinton strategist, has scripted a suggestion for an Obama attack ad. Here's his advice to Barack:

The next time Hillary uses the recycled red phone ad, counter with one of your own. When the phone rings in the middle of the night, have a woman’s voice, with a flat Midwestern accent, answer it and say, “Hold on” into the receiver. Then she should shout, “Bill! It’s for you!”

Dick Morris' suggested ad is both amusing and astute.

Wow. And they wonder why many women feel this is about men not wanting to vote for a woman....Another dose of misogyny anyone?

Posted by: Annie | 10 Mar 2008 14:14:36

Thats twice I have laughed out loud in so many minutes. This spoof advert and, as reported elsewhere in the Times, the fact the baby pictured in the Clinton "it's 03.00am" advert turns out top be eighteen years of age and an Obama supporter!

Posted by: Geoffrey | 10 Mar 2008 16:28:46

Why are we living in the past with a candidate that is promising change or it is just like I figured he isn't going to change a thing except the color of the person in the oval office If he wins the presdentacy. He keeps promising to go forward with a new Idea but look out he is surrounded with all of the old Washington and he is their puppet.

Posted by: George Delaney | 10 Mar 2008 23:18:47

Brilliant, Mr. Morris!

There's plenty of women more suitable than Hillary for the presidency.
I'm a woman and I voted for Obama

Posted by: Murry | 11 Mar 2008 04:38:59

I cannot all this prejudice against a woman who happens to be a Clinton. The prejudice is not new, it was evident from the moment Bill Clinton first campaigned for President. it was Hillary who retorted "heck... don't vote for him". People forget prejudice against women has a longer history than prejudice against blacks or some other race.

Posted by: Frank | 11 Mar 2008 07:50:08

it is amazing how many prejudiced posters there are in The Times. So many comments about air pollution reports on the BBC, but on BBC TV a BBC team spent days in Beijing and their comment? How pristine the air and weather were. Human rights? How about the human rights of the aborigines who were shooed away durng Aurstalia's 200th anniversary parade. And that was on TV and no one complained. How about the reservations dotted all over the USA? And the ever expanding Israeli settlements in Palestine? All funded and paid for and armed by the USA.
the Olympics? It should be abolished. Or reserved for white people. But that means people from all six continents in the world anyway.

Posted by: Frank | 11 Mar 2008 07:51:39

Annie, you have missed the point completely. I don't think for a minute that the bulk of the opposition to Hillary is because she is a woman; have you forgotten that Hillary actually started out with the "2 Clintons for the price of one" message until she realised how unpopular this was?

I do think that the opposition to Hillary is because she is perceived as a cold, power-hungry manipulator (this at least is different from Bill, who is perceived as a warm, power-hungry manipulator)

Posted by: Andy | 11 Mar 2008 10:12:10

Sen. Clinton's suggestion that ONLY herself and Sen. McCain are good for commander-in-Chiefs, and Sen. Obama is only good enough for number two (VP) despite the fact that he is ahead of her in number of delegates and popular votes, leaves many of us guess what she implies.

A new all-time low for you Mr. Morris

Posted by: cathie mcgraw | 11 Mar 2008 12:44:22

I actually don't get the joke. Why shouldn't Bill Clinton receive calls?

Oh, unless the caller is Monica Lewinsky, of course, that would make quite a good ad.

Posted by: dashdot | 11 Mar 2008 14:27:04

Cathie, I don't believe you don't get the ad. Wasn't Bill Clinton the president? When the red phone rang for him ,Hillary couldn't do anything but give the phone to Bill, cause the phone would always be for the president, not the first lady, Hence what did she do ,answer the phone. Whew!!

Posted by: Jacquue | 11 Mar 2008 16:25:14

well, well, well, a scene from the Clinton era. So called political cheaters ib their wives. Just as Hillary clinton took the abuse from her husband and expect to be a role model for the women in the United States, so will the wife of Spitzer. I am ashamed of both women. I would not vote for Hillary Clinton under any circumstances. I am a white professional woman.

Posted by: judy | 11 Mar 2008 19:55:49

what sort of journalism is this? So you are saying she won't be able to cope with problems as she is a woman? She'll have to get her husband to do it?
What I have found throughout my life is that men are the ones who cause problems and women are the ones who pick up the pieces and sort things out. I think it's about time a woman took charge of things. I can't wait till old misogynist idiots like you die off. Never reading your articles again, or watching any of those video interviews either, because they are also a load of anti-hillary biased crap.

Posted by: tam | 11 Mar 2008 20:41:12

I'm sorry but to suggest that a women, being dinied the right to vote,in the old days is a lot different from Black women and men being raped, killed, tortured and the list goes on..MARY...And the change that Obama is promising is no different from the change the last president you voted for promised you, your reaching for straws as a reason to dislike him, when in fact there is only one reason,HE is BLACK...as for Hillary saying she has the experience to handle an emergency and Obama does'nt,?Well what world emergency did she ever handle that i missed? So as for the phone gag it is funny, who would she turn to if there was an actuall emergency, or will she cry when speaking like she as done before and show weak emotion to the rest of the world..our commander in chief must always maintain and be in control and there is no excuse for losing it...

Posted by: sean | 11 Mar 2008 23:30:59

The real point is that with good leadership we wouldn't need the red phone to ring. We need a leader who will keep us out of war, who will do everything in HIS power to keep us out of fiascos like IRAQ. The argument shouldn't be over who will do the better job managing the next war

Posted by: beek-er | 11 Mar 2008 23:32:53

I agree with the comments opposing Hillary but not because she is a woman. I have been ready to vote for a woman President since before there was a movement to draft Jeanne Kirkpatrick back in 1987. Neither is it because she is married to Bill (but there is some atagonism there).

To me the past three Presidents and 20 years have been a political wasteland filled with sharp political divisions in this country. Hillary is another divider, not a uniter. I find her underhanded and devious methods a reminder of our present moron-in-chief.

So as far as I am concern Hillary not now and not ever. It is an issue of respect, not gender.

Posted by: Sam Brown | 11 Mar 2008 23:33:22

Geoffrey has the idea. 4 years ago Obama said he would never run because he lacks the experience and he does not believe in running for a position if you lack the experience. Now he said some fellow democrats (major party leaders, including 3 who have run for pres before and lost) convinced him to run. He is not running on his own, or his true merits and qualifications. He is being coached and advised by these party leaders. They are against Hillary because she stands up on the Senate floor and tells it like it is! She is the true reformer! Just read and compare their speeches on the Senate floor. This is who they really are! If Obama gets in then the team of 3 didn't make it candidates are in control! Hillary is not the party divider, and Obama got himself caught in the middle of their scam and became a part of it! She can't expose it now, but it will come out later!

Posted by: Rhonda | 12 Mar 2008 00:06:13

At least Hillarys husband was President. Who could Obama turn to at 3:00 am.? Could Barack turn to his wife for advice on matters of state? I think not.

Posted by: Joseph Bartosh | 12 Mar 2008 00:12:23

You say, Hillary is cold and power-hungry. Why? Is Obama not power-hungry also. The fact that he is running against Hillary simply means he is also hungry for the President's power. YOu should know that all politicians are. Don't tell me Obama has the angelic intention to serve the country. My golly! Tell that to the Marines! Well, i don't really care if Hillary is considered power-hungry so long as she can do something for the country in realistic terms than rely on Obama's promises. What's wrong with being power-hungry? What is important is whether the person you are voting is ready to president at Day 1. We are in a critical situation and we cannot afford to wait because we still have to train a president. Obama is not a genius. It would take him months just to familiarize the presidency. Let's be rational! Are we willing to wait? Obama fans, be enlightened.

Bill answers from the next room where he is entertaining an eager young intern. "Hold on Hill, I am Comeing.........ah.....

Posted by: Mary | 12 Mar 2008 01:31:02

This phone ad is the dumbest thing. How can a president sleep when hundreds of millions of citizens have a direct line to his/her bedside phone? Hillary, you are a dumb one to have thought of or approved this ad. So how could you be President of the United States?

Posted by: San Ying | 12 Mar 2008 05:25:24

I wonder if SNL would run this. Probably not since they are in the Clinton's pockets.

Posted by: Kathy | 13 Mar 2008 06:20:02

The counter counter ad

The next time Obama uses a counter phone ad, counter with one of your own. When the phone rings in the middle of the night, have Oprah Winfrey, answer it and say, “Hold on” into the receiver. Then she should shout, “Obama! It’s for you!”
In the background you hear, "You take it!" Then the slamming of the door and running downstairs.
"Hello, may I ask who is calling?"
"It's Ben...Bernanke. Is the President there?"
"Well... what's it connection with?"
"Nothing really important...just the US economy is going down the..."

Posted by: Stephen Pain | 13 Mar 2008 11:59:57

Has anyone looked at Obama's voting record? He refuses to take a side on many issues, he votes present, not yea or nay. What a spineless man he is.

Posted by: michael | 14 Mar 2008 20:58:55

I always felt the best response would be to show her advert and have the caller say "...sorry, wrong number..." when Hillary picks up the phone.
