It is not often that political analogies are as apt as Tad Purdum's between John McCain and Barack Obama now and Bob Dole and Bill Clinton in the past. The only qualification I would put in is that in 1996 the laconic war-hero Dole (maimed in the Second World War) was running against the incumbent President, not yet lamed by Monica Lewinsky. I would say too that I expect the contest to be a more even one this time.
