The bad taste of Mike Huckabee

Given the fears of assassination that continue to dog the Obama campaign, Mike Huckabee's NRA joke could hardly be in worse taste. It's moments like this that will scupper his VP chances.

Comments

From his retarded comments on evolution and his bringing the Bible to political debates to declare he believed it was the absolute word of God, I have long regarded Huckabee as merely a man missing at least one full lobe of his brain.

But this is different.

This shows a sadistic idea of humor and is definitely tinged with threat. He strikes me as a potentially dangerous man.

It is moreover, since is talking about a leading presidential candidate, a possibly criminal remark.

If you or I made this kind of comment in public about the president, the Secret Service would knocking on the door shortly after with all kinds of intrusive questions and opening a file, as they should.

Of course, previously we had another brain-dead member of America's Religious Right doing something similar.

Pat Robertson called for the assassination of a national leader. He should have been regarded as a terrorist under America's oppressive anti-terror laws, but he got away with it with no consequences.

America simply has the most bizarre national politics this side of Zimbabwe. Where else would a man of such low quality be considered as a potential presidential candidate by anyone other than his mother?

And, of course, this Appalachian Throwback was on McCain's list of possible VPs, but the one benefit of Huckabee's criminal remark was that he was certainly instantly struck off.

It does seem by recent American history that God favors cretins.

Of course, before this, in the rational parts of the planet there were lots of reasons to treat Huckabee with scorn. But in America one dares not point these things out for fear of a verbal assault.

Imagine a Vice President Huckabee showing up at an important international negotiation thumping a Bible and declaring it the absolute word of God? Then challenging the others to declare the same?

That would be no sillier than what he actually did at a Republican candidates' debate.

Haven't Americans had enough of religion's encroachment into politics and government with Bush?
The Founders knew these things should not be mixed.

Thomas Jefferson would certainly have called Huckabee an idiot.

Jefferson once called Patrick Henry, a Christian and bombastic orator, an "emotional volcano with no guiding intelligence."

By the way, Huckabee looks like Gomer Pyle, only with dyed hair and eyebrows. Maybe that's not an important political fact, but it speaks forcefully to the man's so-called "down to earth genuineness."

Wow

That went down like a fart in a spacesuit.

For God's sake, it's a quip at the NRA. Treating it as a solicitation or endorsement of assassination is wet. Get a grip (or they'll give you the deadtree frontpage on Mondays which seems reserved for the 'challenged').

Huckabee defended this on 'Meet the Press' yesterday. He said he made a mistake, he wasn't good at off the cuff jokes and he was sorry about it and would never wish anyone any harm. Fair enough.

Then, when he'd got out of the hole, he continued to say it was one in a long line of political gaffes that included Reagan joking about bombing Russia and McCain singing 'bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran' - which, quote he "found pretty funny"....

!!!!!

I can't believe this guy could possibly be considered for VP...

It is apparent he thought his comments were given in a safe place. To my surprise no one really laughed. Off the cuff usually depicts how you really feel. It really is a shame.

There are other, much more profound, reasons for Huckabee not being a good veep than some stupid unthinking remark made abut guns and a Presidential Candidate. I like the conviction of believing that teh Bible is the word of God, and having th courage to say it out loud, when everyone considers it stupid to have those beliefs, as does Mr.Chuckman. Would you make fun of a Muslim declaring teh Koran to be the word of God as stupid and inane? I don't think so. But I stray.
Huckabee is really a liberal with a strong pro-life ideal. A Pro-life stance does not a conservative make. Remember all the criminals he freed? Remember the taxes? Remember funny Christian attitude to people who have broken our laws by crossing our borders, but should not be deported, because that is not what Jesus would do?
Those are the reasons why we do not want Huckabee as Veep.
