It is often said at election time, especially by the candidates, that in the United States anyone can be anything he (and now she) wishes to be. And that usually means being president. Having known America since 1960 I would say that the concept can be galvanizing but at the same time it casts a thick cloud over the lives of a fair number of people in ordinary jobs who feel that they do is paltry in comparison with what might have been.
It is not unknown for a blog poster to propose another whose comment he has been struck by for president. It is a bit of a ritual.

The internet can be great, but unfortunately these days seems more likely to turn out this sort of thing. Which is a joke.
