Full speed ahead for McCain Sr.

Roberta_mccainApparently slowing down is not in the McCain family genes.

The candidate's 96-year-old mother recently added yet another ticket to her extensive collection of speeding fines.

The Sleuth reports:

Did the cop know who she was? "Well, it was written right there," she said, referring to her driver's license. "But they'll sure know who I am when he becomes president."

Full speed ahead, then?

So, apparently, the whole clan shares the qualities of arrogance and stupid behavior?

Posted by: JOHN CHUCKMAN, TORONTO | 25 Jun 2008 20:37:46

Madame McCain has tremendous potential to help her son move into the White House in January, BUT this issue will not help, 96 and still driving??? Doesn't Mr. McCain want his mother see him in the Whitehouse???

Posted by: Winston | 26 Jun 2008 00:46:18

Oh, how proud she and her family must feel! Proudly collecting speeding tickets at the age of 96. Wonder what her equally arrogant son will say when she finally kills someone in one of her driving escapades. I'm sure it will be the other person's fault. Who in the hell in allowing this accident-waiting-to-happen to drive?

Posted by: Patricia Randal | 26 Jun 2008 02:51:45

Go granny, go! This lady has some SPUNK! Joni-Michigan

Posted by: Joni-MI | 26 Jun 2008 04:46:24

Sweet Hay-Zeus...

That ol' bag o' bones shouldn't be driving a golf cart, much less an automobile on public roads.

Seriously... 96 years old?!? I'm sure she hasn't taken a driving test since desegregation. States should try to give 1/10th the attention on senior drivers as they do to teenagers. They're both arrogant, and they're both dangerous behind the wheel. The stats don't lie.

Posted by: Derek | 26 Jun 2008 07:29:53

well kudos to her that she still drives - but maybe time for a driver??????????

Posted by: pia | 26 Jun 2008 09:13:41

Is "arrogance" a DNC talking point du jour??

Posted by: hector | 26 Jun 2008 12:57:46

And who she is makes a difference exactly why? Laws are meaningless when they are not fairly applied. Why hasn't she lost her license yet? Most habitual speeders lose it after a certain number of offenses.

Off topic, that picture scares me. Put a wig on McCain and he is the spitting image of his mother.

Posted by: Scarlett | 26 Jun 2008 13:06:20

Well, she seems a little old to be driving. Maybe after her son is president, he can hire a driver for her or put her in a home or the elderly.

Posted by: James Staley | 26 Jun 2008 13:15:26

Speeding ticket at 96? I wouldn't mind!

Posted by: Ania, Chicago | 26 Jun 2008 13:17:16

Arrogance comes from the knowledge and confidence of being right the majority of the time. Good for her.

Individuals who always make negative remarks about others feel free to do so as long as it is not about them. This political year has become out of control and not really looking at the real issues here. Its about all American born people no-matter what their color or race is. Stop finding the littlest fault you can find. Stick to the real issues. Getting this country United States of American back to the true meaning of what our forefathers established for us. Yea, everyone wants change, who doesnt, but that doesnt mean you choose someone because of their color, thats not what this about. Its about what this country stands for..protecting our people and children and providing the best economic bases that all individuals can have regardless of anything else. Yes, it is scary..who is the best man McCain/Obama. No-one has the any ideal other then speculation. Until one or the other is in office, we truly have no-ideal how they will respond to all the indepth information they will be handed. Its time that it is about us the American Born for once who really love this country and are proud to be a United States citizen.
You dont hear much about the press and david letterman late show or any one else say anything negative about obama. So stop all the negative remarks about the other politcal running mates and their families. Yea, I like Obama seems like a nice guy.
But, Do I really know him..No, not anymore then I know McCain. But, what do I know about their experience is more than the other guy.
Stop, trying to hurt others through this election. Remember it is about us the people our children and our survival. Who cares if this lady got a ticket, everyone in their life time has gotten a ticket. Thats not the really issue here or age or how she dresses. Do the right thing make the right choices stay on track. Its about US....

You all need to LIGHTEN UP. I think she's great! Go Grannie go Grannie go Grannie go!

How sad there are so many people spewing hate instead of celebrating the good health and mental alertness of a 96 year old woman. Obviously, Mrs.McCain has made informed, healthy choices in her life in addition to being gifted with good genes. My dad is 93 and also, enjoys amazing health and is still passing his CA driving tests. He has had no accidents, scraps, or tickets. I am very comfortable he is not a hazard on the road. He lives alone, manages his money, and all household activities. He still participates in community service. Wouldn't it be more productive to learn from these seniors. There are going to be more and more active seniors as the population ages. His doctors tell my dad they hope they will be like him when they are 75. I don't remember Bob Hope, George Burns, Art Linkletter being talked about in such a demeaning way. Blessings and continued good health to Mrs. McCain.

It's totally all right to coment and critizice madame McCain.
But: LAY OFF MY WIFE!

Posted by: Luis H. Sanchez | 26 Jun 2008 17:09:43

It would be interesting to see if the hateful spewing commentators would have the same comments if they are fortunate to live into their nineties in good enough health to do as she does.
Should she be speeding, of course not, nor should I be. But neither should these people who more than likely consider themselves
loving caring and compassionate, be calling people the things they do. With a little luck they could find themselves being on the receiving end.

My Mother use to say that people who use bad language and hurtful words do so because of a lack of education they are unable to express themselves properly. I'm sure she would say these folks fit into that category.

May your good health continue for many more years Mrs McCain, but I would suggest you slow down just a wee bit.

Posted by: Bill Aiken | 26 Jun 2008 17:19:33

Well one thing no one seems to mention is that if Mrs McCain has made it to 96 and is still driving and has a sense of humor and seems to be on th ball well that should put to trest the Mccain is to old to be president nonsense the Obama campaign is trying to insert into the election with words such as "He has lost touch...." implying he is senile or worse. I hope I can make it to 96 and still be driving. Oh by the way has anyone checked out tohe law in Arizona as to elders driing like do they have to be tested every year after a certain age and if so well it looks like Mrs McCain has fulfilled the requirements or else she wouldn't have a liscense I presume.

Posted by: Guess Who | 26 Jun 2008 17:42:29

Hey, at least she drives better than Ted Kennedy!

Posted by: Hephaestus | 26 Jun 2008 17:56:20

So she was speeding ...
36mph
or 136mph?

are there any facts in this
news article?

Or is this propaganda forming opinions?

Posted by: K Teeters | 26 Jun 2008 18:43:06

Once we have the teenagers and 90 + drivers off the roads then we can concentrate on getting the 20's and 80's off, then the 30's and 70's ........ Then if we could just find another source for our power we wouldn't have to send any more funds to bankroll the Opec crowd's mansions, private jets, yachts, island etc.

Posted by: Ann | 26 Jun 2008 19:04:15

If Mrs. Roberta McCain were to run for public office, I would surely vote for her, because of her graceful beauty and age. At her graceful age of 96 years, she is still remains trendy and rubbing shoulders with those in their 60's. God continue to bless you.

Posted by: John Jacobs | 26 Jun 2008 21:02:42

It's interesting to read the brash opinionated statements, and how a simple speeding ticket (something millions of people receive every year) can be utilised as a tool for political harm. Am i right in assuming, arrogance is inferred simply by her position in the state? Or the fact that she is rich and isn't covered in fetter as many people who reach this age are? As for those of you who think she is not fit to be on the road - many more lethal accidents involve careless behaviour by 17-24 yr olds
As a Brit, i find it amazing how something so utterly trivial can be set upon in this way for spiteful and vindictice purposes.
Read the text, there is no exclaimation mark! Therefore just imagine re-reading it as your own cutesy granny; how arrogant as her child/grandchild you must be. Grow up!

Posted by: LEE TUDDENHAM | 27 Jun 2008 10:53:25

Anyone who can't find times and places where it is perfectly safe to exceed the speed limit shouldn't be driving. Some of this lady's critics are either such incompetents or just out to politick in denial of common sense.

Posted by: Alan Wilkinson | 28 Jun 2008 10:41:40

Fabulous!! Bravo!! I think each driver should be assigned a personal automotive speed (PAS) that they must maintain 90% of the time they are on the road. This PAS would, of course, be based on their age. It would reduce the awful accident rate of teenagers and reduce the Social Security funding problems at the same time.
Bravo for Mrs. McCain in taking the lead in this.
As for arrogance, O Mamma, NO OBAMA!

Posted by: slyscribe | 28 Jun 2008 17:41:22

She's 96 because a privileged life with no worries and no doubts about your opinion allows longevity.

She's also an arrogant fool with no interest in democracy - just like her idiot son.
USA has no real political life, just a succession of greedy fools.

They need another revolution in America. Soon.

Posted by: walter Dithers | 29 Jun 2008 05:04:26

I am glad she actually is speeding at 96. Most older people twenty years younger than her can barely go close to the speed limit. She is keep up with us young people. A good sign for the vitality of her son too.

Posted by: Ryan | 29 Jun 2008 06:38:54

Fantastic and proof if ever there was any that the speed limits are ludicrous. Go Mrs. McCain, you're amazing.

Posted by: c montagne | 29 Jun 2008 12:25:50

Hello! McFly! The government has it's own rules for it's own powerful members. It can do what it wants, when it wants. This old ghost driver is related to a powerful family. She can do what she wants when she wants. We all just better do what we're told.

Posted by: dave | 29 Jun 2008 14:18:28

Surprised Ron Dennis hasn't signed her up. Fast, able to play politics with the best of them, knows how to handle the press. Perfect (and the first woman in F1 for 16 years!)
