Nicholas von Hoffman on retirement savings. I have been in the American retirement system for forty years and for the last twenty as a beneficiary. I must say that the long view has worked for me, including the principle that it is dangerous to put all one's money in stocks, which can be a horrifying nightmare for quite long periods of time. Then too my retirement has been managed by a non-profit organization for college and university teachers, which has good oversight and has offered more and more choices over the years. Social security has been solid so far but what it rests on is becoming increasingly precarious. A significant proportion of senior Americans rely on it for most of their income: not a happy situation.
I agree that dubious fund managers are not as rare as they might be. A good, detailed road-map is very desirable even for the young considering their retirement options.
