Murad needs your help

My erstwhile blogging partner Murad Ahmed watched the last episode of the Sopranos last night. And he doesn't know what to watch next.

The Wire? No, he's watched that. And West Wing too.

So what next? Any ideas?

Mad Men - from the same stable, beautifully shot and politically incorrect!

Dexter and Underbelly are quite good.

Six Feet Under

Posted by: BD | 25 Nov 2008 14:59:08

All five seasons of the Brady Bunch are available in a complete DVD set.

Posted by: Tony Francis | 25 Nov 2008 15:03:53

Why not read a book instead?

Posted by: NL | 25 Nov 2008 15:09:59

Agree on Mad Men. If he wants to shift down a gear, try The Shield (moral turpitude for people who can't stomach the neo-con claptrap in 24). For laughs at that same marginally lower level of intellectual polish, try Weeds (if only for the chance to gaze longingly at Mary-Lousie Parker). And I hear Generation Kill is well worth a try - David Simon's post-Wire series on troops in Iraq.

Dexter, definitely! Fantastic program.

Posted by: Alasdair Mowat | 25 Nov 2008 15:41:42

I agree with the Dexter idea. It's very good and has that 'bubbling under the surface' feel that Sopranos had.

Then again, Spooks is really brilliant at the moment.

Posted by: Ben Maccer | 25 Nov 2008 16:08:30

Family Guy.

Posted by: Jez | 25 Nov 2008 16:11:55

Battlestar Galactica - new version.

Taking the polystyrene out of Sci-Fi since episode 1

Posted by: BR | 25 Nov 2008 16:12:52

If he can stomach the sci-fi premise, then the reimagining of Battlestar Galactica is beautiful, epic, and riven with brutal human conflict. Far closer to The Shield than Star Trek.

Posted by: Tom Foster | 25 Nov 2008 16:16:10

Gilmore Girls -- you can entirely ignore the plot and just sit back and enjoy the rapid fire dialogue

Posted by: JB | 25 Nov 2008 16:17:47

The Shield or 24 if you want something entertaining and fast-paced.

Dexter is also pretty good but if you want a laugh then how about Arrested Development or Curb your Enthusiasm

Posted by: RH | 25 Nov 2008 16:27:30

The Shield!

House

Deadwood. The only TV Show that can be put alongside The Sopranos and The Wire

Posted by: Bruno Alves | 25 Nov 2008 17:16:18

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People are both well worth watching - and re-watching if you've already seen them.

Posted by: Jonathan | 25 Nov 2008 17:23:42

Generation Kill might repay your time. Just make sure you watch something from HBO. British TV hasn't offered much of value since the end of The Day Today

Posted by: Michael | 25 Nov 2008 17:27:32

DEADWOOD - but then be prepared to be incredibly frustrated at the fact that it was cancelled after three glorious series.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - greatest sitcome ever, and accordsing to star Jeffrey Tambor, ready to be made into a film any time now.

MAD MEN - sublime telly - better than Sopranos IMO.

Posted by: James Martin | 25 Nov 2008 17:32:20

Band of Brothers. Every episode. In one sitting.

Posted by: Mark Stockwell | 25 Nov 2008 18:14:40

Agree with Dexter, Mad Men, Gen Kill plus also check out the magnificent Entourage.

Ari Gold is based on Rahm Emanuel's brother.

Posted by: Andy C | 25 Nov 2008 18:57:56

Damages.

Glen Close is superb, not to mention Ted Danson

Posted by: Old Hack | 25 Nov 2008 20:15:21

I agree with the Le Carre suggestion, but better still is the Fry & Laurie Jeeves and Wooster series. Pure delight - and might lead to a (re)reading of the original, thus satisfying one of the above posts.

BROTHERHOOD - Set in Rhode Island now in its 3rd series, about two brothers - the thug and the politician. excellent plots and casting. (Showtime)

Friday Night Lights. Hard to believe but it's sensational.

Posted by: Nick | 25 Nov 2008 21:53:49

Lots of Times comment readers are sitting in (probably bothering the missus) with the same DVD's I have... lol
1. Arrested Development (be prepared to become addicted and to watch it very many times)
2. Deadwood (As everyone's said above class TV)
3. BSG (When everyone at work discovers what Frak means I'm Frak-ed)

Homicide: Life on the Streets. Plenty of seasons there. Head to eBay.

Nothing matches the level reached by Sopranos, Wire and West Wing.
So, why not change from drama to comedy? Try Fraser. You have eleven long seasons to enjoy.

Posted by: ortega | 26 Nov 2008 13:04:04

John Adams is brilliant. Not sure it's out on DVD yet but it will be soon. And the book's even better.

Posted by: rickyj | 26 Nov 2008 14:07:20

Oh, house! house!

Posted by: Sabari | 27 Nov 2008 09:25:27

Just start watching the sopranos again from the beginning...its even better second time round !
