Suketu Mehta on Bombay. The city shaped Zubin Mehta, whose father was a conductor there, Dom Moraes, who burst on the English poetic scene in the later 1950s, Salman Rushdie, and Sunil Gavaskar, who has always lived there, and who physically intervened on behalf of victims in Hindu-Muslim riots some years ago. Since those years its receptive cosmopolitanism has been affected by narrower and fiercer political and other allegiances.
To Indian schoolboys in the 1950s elsewhere, the city spelled glamour and peril.
On all the occasions I have been in Mumbai since, I have felt an umistakable energy pulsing through it. That has already resumed.
