« Ten ways of making cycling bearable in November | All Posts | Green clubbing »

Still on the bike theme...

... I see in the city of Missoula, in Montana, police are giving away free lights to cyclists stopped for not having them. What a sensible idea. Unlike here where you get a slap on the wrist and a £30 fine. When I was a student, I was stopped on Oxford high street. I naughtily gave a fake name (actually, my mother's maiden name) but my correct address. Telling half a lie seemed somehow easier. Police letters, then threats from bailiff companies, then eventually court summons dropped menacingly through our letter box, until my boyfriend phoned up and said he'd never heard of the name in question. I know I was in the wrong but all this bother would have been saved had the bobby reached into his pockets, passed me some lights and bid me safe cycling.

So not only were you knowingly breaking the law (twice!) and putting yourself and others in danger, but you want the tax payer to buy some lights for you? Unbelievable. Having spent 4 years cycling / driving / walking & motorcycling around Oxford I know how dangerous unlit cyclists are in that city. You should have paid the fine, bought some lights and been glad that the Police stopped you before you ended up in hospital or causing an accident on the roads. "Safe Cycling" has to start with the cyclist.

I know, Minty, I was young and foolish, and new to cycling in cities. I agree with you: safe cycling starts with the person pedalling. But I am still smitten by the idea of police support.

Posted by: Anna Shepard | 28 Nov 2006 09:20:53

And who do you think will be paying for those lights that you expect the policeman to just hand out to you? I can well imagine the protests if it became policy to spend tax money on handing out free lights to cyclists. What next - free hands-free kits for mobile users who don't have one? Grow up, buy some lights, and stop expecting the tax payer to bail you out of your own stupidity.

I frequently see expensive mountain bikes being ridden with no lites if you can afford the bike you can afford a set of lights for a fiver try Argos.

Posted by: paul cox | 28 Nov 2006 19:33:45

I hate to rain on the parade, but what's to stop someone going round the corner and selling the light, and then coming back for another. It's what happens in big US cities with free prescription drugs that are handed out. Nice idea, but a tad naive.

And let me second the sentiment that what you need to do is to buy a light. Not just to stay within the law and protect yourself, but also to take responsibility. You aren't a victim; you're a cyclist, and a grown-up.

I agree wholeheartedly with Minty, but my experiences of cycling in the lawless, anarchic hell-holes that are modern British cities is that bike lights, like everything else not nailed down, are stolen every time you leave your bike for 20 seconds outside the newsagents. As a result you buy cheap ones which give out mid-ride after about 3 weeks, or expensive ones which you hide in your sock-drawer for fear of burglars and then forget to take with you. The sanctimonious ones who would persecute us for this are invariably those motorists who have been driving around with a smashed tail-light, one brake-light and a duff head-light for months - the winter months at that!

Slightly belated comment, but you might be pleased to hear that Oxford police now waive fines for cycling without lights if you can take receipts for lights into the police station within a certain time. Also, the union gave away free bike lights to students at the beginning of this year.

The most common combination used is in the form of the oral contraceptive pill (OCP). Treatment of endometriosis has involved the administration of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole [Arimidex] and letrozole [Femara] are examples). These drugs act by interrupting local estrogen formation within the endometriosis implants themselves. They also inhibit estrogen production in the ovary, brain, and other sources, such as adipose tissue

How can you determine if you are experiencing early menopause? If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or others that are not listed and you suspect you may be experiencing pre-menopausal symptoms, it's time to bring your speculations to your doctor.
There are three main tests you can take to determine a menopause diagnosis -
1.FSH test - A follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) test is used to test a woman's FSH levels. If levels are high it's a sign that the ovaries have stopped producing sufficient estrogen and could mean that the body has begun menopause.
2.Blood test - You can ask your doctor for a blood test to determine estradiol levels. Estradiol is a form of estrogen and the levels decrease when the ovaries begin to fail. Therefore, low estradiol levels may be a sign of early menopause.
3.Thyroid test - A thyroid test is a good idea because many perimenopause symptoms mirror thyroid problems. Therefore, this test will help you determine if what you are experiencing is indeed early menopause.
If you are diagnosed with early menopause, you will find that there are different treatment options to help you cope with symptoms. Be sure to talk to you doctor about all possible treatments.

Your doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal agent to cure your yeast infection. The two main oral antifungals are Diflucan and Nizoral. The oral yeast infection medications have the advantage of being able to cure a yeast infection in one or two doses and you don't have to deal with messy creams. The disadvantage to oral yeast infection medications is they may have side effects or interact with other medication you may be taking. Diflucan has a higher incidence of side effects such as, headaches, nausea, abdominal pain and dizziness. Nizoral has a lower incidence of side effects, but you cannot take it with many other medicines. Always tell you doctor or gynecologist what medicines you are taking. You should not take either of these oral antifungals while pregnant or breast-feeding.

Sometimes it happens that for the same ailment different treatments are offered by different doctors. This confuses the patients to a great deal. Which treatment to go for, which doctor to follow etc, etc. Under these circumstances people can refer to the http://www.buy-viagra-with-us.com/resources/patient_info_site.html patient info sites where they can get all the information regarding the disease, its treatments, prices etc.
