Why chutney is the answer if you’re stuck for an ethical Christmas gift
And not just chutney, other pickled delights, biscuits, spiced nuts and fudge all get the thumbs up as green alternative to the inevitable set of Boots smellies. For a blog of inspiration, click here. This is eco-worrying made tasty. This month’s Waitrose Food Illustrated also features mouth-watering recipes for edible gifts. Not only does this give you a way of using up old jam jars that have been multiplying in corners of the kitchen (soak them in boiling water and then scrub the old labels off) and other random bits of packaging and ribbon but it’s super cheap. The receipt from my nine jars of roasted garlic and onion chutney was £4.20.
The recipe came from Keith Abel’s fantastic book Cooking Outside the Box. I can also heartily recommend his lamb stew with parsnips and carrots. It manages to be both simple and a crowd pleaser.
However, having only made chutney twice, I’m quite conservative with the recipes I choose. They have to simple and foolproof. But I’d like to expand a bit, does anyone have any good ones that work as Christmas presents?
And sorry about the delayed posting of my list of UK’s greenerati; it’s coming I promise, but these eco-celebs are hard to pin down.

Since writing the post, I had this fantastic pumpkin chutney recipe pointed out to me. Here is link:

Good idea and they give a double dividend - as well as saving money and resources, homemade Christmas presents really show that you've put some though and effort into them!
For the record, I absolutely love tomato and onion chutney :)

I know I should stop commenting on my own blog but I'm really excited about this spicy tomato chutney recipe

In fact, I'm excited about the becks and posh (rhyming slang for 'nosh' if you don't speak cockney) blog. For food lovers, it's top notch.

I always give food Christmas presents, my favourite is red onion chutney a gorgeous sticky chutney made from 1/2 bottle red wine, 25 mls port, 250 mls of vinegar, 150g sugar, 1/2 kg of red onions.
Fry the onions of in some butter and add the sugar and liquid reduce down until the liquid is gone and you are left with a beautiful purple chutney. It is popular vevry year with my family!

thanks for the mention Anna. One of the things I miss the most about England is my Sunday morning home-cooked English breakfast, pouring over the Sunday Times Style Magazine and a dose of AA Gill plus a giggle over whats-his-face- that old film director guy. Michael Winner?. Sigh.. - I had forgotten how much I missed it all until you reminded me of it.
If you or your readers ever want to recycle some Style Magazines, you can always send them my way!
(BTW - There is one jar of my chutney residing in England somewhere in Suffolk I think, that is if it hasn't already been consumed!)

Thanks for linking to my recipe Anna. My husband (who is American) has recently discovered chutney and absolutely loves it (especially with Cheddar). So my kitchen is running at double speed to make enough jars for him.
I had planned to make green tomato chutney but after my tomato crop was affected by blight I had to think of another recipe - and since I had more than enough pumpkins in storage I decided to use them instead!

I don't like this type of chutney and pickle because it also give gastric trouble and on Christmas there is no way I like roasted turkey with wine and that the best gift on Christmas for me.
