Something bright and light...
On a more frivolous note (than my previous post, anyway), am I the last to hear about Made, an accessories brand that has a concession in London and Dublin’s flagship Topshop stores?
It makes hair clips, earrings and jewellery out of discarded flip-flops collected during clean-ups of the East African coast.
It reminds me of a company that I heard about recently that will make shoes from your old jeans.
I hate to get all product-y on this blog, but I love all this consumer resourcefulness. It reminds me of the time I tried to make a handbag out of my most beloved pair of trousers. Suffice to say, it ended up being used as a moisture mat for the wormery.

You can win £50 of Made jewelry by completing the Hippyshopper.com poll on plastic bags.

Hi- I guess you arent the last because I had never heard of this either OR the idea. I think the idea of being able to recycle discarded goods is so important to keeping or environment from total natural depletion. MADE has apparently identified quiet an originial and very creatiive way, facscinating actually. I have recently become very in-tuned to ideas like this after meeting with Natalie Chanin designer/Owner of Alabama Chanin. Speaking with her made me realize a very true statement- when it comes to clothing.. How much of our environment are we depeleting because so many of todays markets sell clothing not meant to last beyond one season.. Her garments were phenomenal and she too is a huge supporter of not depeleting our environment to meet our everday needs. What she said to me should have made sense to me a long time ago.. but these organic & natural, hand sewn garments are constructed so well they are meant to be keepers and passed down from one generation to the next.. Not tossed out after one time worn. I had never looked at the industry this way nor the fact that it does have such an impact on our environment. So i guess overall i am thankful for those who pursue this alternative method.. And continue to look into stories like these to broaden my awarness.
