Good year for apples - but not good enough
Anybody with an apple tree will tell you that this has been a good year for apples. But it seems it's not been good enough for the makers of Copella English Apple Juice, who recently dropped the word "English" from their label.
But they still have this blurb: "Boxford Farm in the heart of the Suffolk countryside has been the home of Copella for nearly 40 years. We still make our apple juice using carefully pressed hand-picked apples to give a juice that tastes just like it is homemade. Copella juice is made only with handpicked fruit carefully selected when at its ripest and best. We bottle our juice straight after pressing so none of the wonderful straight-from-the-tree flavour is lost."
A friend of mine emailed to ask why "English" had disappeared from the label. This was the reply: "From time to time our stock situation means that we have to go outside of England to get high quality apples to make our juices, as is the case at the moment. This is a temporary situation and we will endeavour to use only English Apples as our priority and shall be returning to Copella English Apple Juice as soon as possible. Please be assured that our juices will still have the same great Copella quality and same great Copella taste."
I have no idea why apples have been hard to come by, but wonder if it may have something to do with the bizarre tendency of free markets to import and export, quite pointlessly, almost identical amounts of basic products.

No, it would be bizarre to buy expensive Apples at home if the cheaper ones across the Straight are, as you say, "almost identical."
