Thou shalt not steal Bibles

There is always something bracing (if alarming) about Singaporean attitudes to crime.  A poor chap has just gone to jail for four months for stealing a Bible (to replace his old tattered copy).  The judge, however, tempered justice with a kind of mercy by making him a present of a brand new Bible with the words  "You will see at page 65 that it says 'thou shalt not steal.'

The defendant was said to have prevous convictions for theft. Apparently, reading his old, tattered copy of the Bible wasn't of much help to him. Maybe four months in the slammer will be more persuasive.
