Sayed Pervez Kambaksh - latest. And the journalists held by the US military.
The journalism student Pervez Kambaksh, held in Afghanistan under sentence of death for supposedly distributing an article about women's rights in Islam, is reported by Reuters as having appeared at an appeal hearing in Kabul to plead innocent. He flatly denies charges of insulting Islam and the Prophet.
Meanwhile Reporters without Borders (RsF) issued a statement on Friday calling on Kabul to give Kambakhsh's lawyer the case file so he could prepare his defence. "The case has not progressed since it was transferred to the Kabul court of justice"
Rsf also points out, however, that the US military are still holding Jawed Ahmad, a young Afghan journalist who works for the Canadian television network CTV; they say he is an “enemy combatant” because of his alleged contacts with the Taliban. They recently freed two other journalists, Sami Al-Haj of AL-Jazeera, and Bilal Hussein, after several years' detention without proof.
