From Basic Instinct to Bible Christianity - a conversion story
The Toledo Blade reports that Joe Eszterhas, who has written many screenplays including Basic Instinct, has now written about his spiritual conversion and his belief in God. In Crossbearer: A Memoir of Faith, he tells of a dramatic conversion after an operation for throat cancer and orders to reform his lifestyle. ""I was going crazy. I was jittery. I twitched. I trembled. I had no patience for anything. … Every single nerve ending was demanding a drink and a cigarette..." He plopped down on a curb and sobbed "Please God, help me." Read on...

Joe Eszterhas and I are two of a kind. A couple of sinners in the Mystical Body of Christ. We cannot go anywhere else, because no one - but no one - can give us what God and His Church give us: the message of eternal life and how to achieve it. Nothing else matters. Repeat, NOTHING.

Why do I keep on hearing about people who've suddenly decided to believe in "god"? I wonder if they now suddenly believe in the devil as well?

Send Joe Eszterhas an email, Alan, and ask him. If he is the Catholic he claims to be, he will say 'Sure'.

Actually, Geoffrey, I couldn't care less what he believes. But why do we keep having discussions about god's (non-)existence and forget about the devil's? It's much more interesting.

If you want to have a discussion about Satan's existence, Alan, how about starting with Rwanda 1994?
Or go back a bit further to the Reformation or the establishment of the British Empire. I don't let anyone try to kid me that either of these iniquities was in accordance with the will of God. The trouble is, no one wants to acknowledge the existence of the Devil, not these days. Oh yes, they don't mind talking about God, but the antithesis seems to embarrass them for some reason. Satan is hard at work, even on the Internet; the millions of child porn websites is proof of that. Not that I log on to any of them, I hasten to add!!

Geoffrey, I'm afraid I have to agree partly with you again.
Most people who happily talk about God's existence seem unwilling to do the same for Satan, devils, demons, angels etc. As you say, I suppose it embarrasses them.
But you know my views, and so it'll hardly surprise you that I think Rwanda was caused by the callousness existing in the minds of so many - especially as a result of poverty, deprivation and ignorance.
The awful thing is the lack of compassion, an inability to put oneself in the other person's place - in a word: brutalisation. (But I don't blame Satan for it.)

Geoff,
Alan is correct. It may upset you but then I don't care - The Hutu's who started the massacre of the minority Tutsi's are predominately catholic. Fancy that. Also, speaking of catholicism and child porn - er, priest's raping children? Surely not! But alas yes. So, in Christopher Hitchens' words, Religion poisons everything.
