Oh no, not again. The crucifrog row is back.
Oh dear. The deeply pretentious and "very personal self portrait of the artist " sculpture of a frog crucified with a beermug in its fist (yes, we have covered it before) is causing trouble again because the museum is close to the Pope's summer retreat at Bressanone. No, its not important and I bet the Pope has greater evils to meditate on than an inept bit of shockart. My point is that churchmen SHOULD NOT RISE to this sort of teasing.
But I direct you to today's report because you may wish to know that the Pope is keen on the seminary cat Milly, at Bressanone. "The rector told Corriere della Sera that the Pope liked to have Milly at his side while reading and "dedicates a few moments to her every day, stroking her head". Hold the front page.

"My point is that churchmen SHOULD NOT RISE to this sort of teasing."
Who says they are being teased? In primitive times crucifixion was a common punishment. Do the religious now claim that the cross is theirs alone to use as imagery?
Jeez.

The sculpture is in poor taste and probably will offend many Christians.
Unlike their Muslims cousins it is highly unlikely Christians will riot in the streets. Unless of course the Muslims decide to defend a prophet of their religion.
The art work is poor and the subject material questionably wanting. Maybe some one in Christian kindness will forgive him rather than burn him?

"The sculpture is in poor taste and probably will offend many Christians"
Why would it? It has nothing to do with Christianity as far as I can see. Lots of people died on crosses. Why should Christians automatically think there is a reference to Jesus?
Muslims and the Koran claim that Jesus wasn't crucified - why don't Christians make a fuss about that?
What if it was a frog strapped in an electric chair - would that offend Christians too?

"Hold the front page"
So the pope likes to stroke a cat. Not front page stuff for sure, but no doubt hoards of his devotees are in thrall already to his wonderful display of grace, love and affection for God's creatures, and what a marvellous example he is to humankind.
It will be interesting if we ever get a Welsh pope who expresses a fondness for sheep............

Clearly, people in the region are upset, if the petition of 10,000 signatures allegedly collected is anything to go by.
Whether the artist deliberately created this pathetic sculpture out of schadenfreude derived from hurting the feelings of Christians is anyone's guess.
One thing worries me though. I hope that mischievous youngsters, or adults for that matter, don't copy the sculpture using live frogs!

As a member of "The Church of Toads and born again frogians" I hope his holiness will not be offended by the sight of our prophet "Freddie Frog" in dire straits.
