Woman-beating justified?
An unnerving article in the Yemen Times takes - with an air of offended reasonableness - the line that "there must be violence against women" because it is sometimes justified and ordered by the Qu'ran. The writer objects to the human rights organizations and their "cultural invasions" which tell women to report attacks to the police, because in his view fathers and brothers must "correct mistakes" in their womenfolk.
"In some cases, violence is necessary...will it be a better society once we see wives, mothers, sisters and daughters going from one police station and one court to another, complaining against their husbands, fathers, brothers and even sons?"
It is worth reading, to understand the mindset which can think this way. Perhaps it is also worth remembering that in Christian Europe the "correction" of wives was so well accepted that there were laws stipulating the size of stick that should be used (no thicker than a man's thumb).
