Amazon reports that sales of books about religion have grown by 50 per cent, a surge fuelled (with delicious irony) by Richard Dawkins' runaway bestseller "The God Delusion". He leads the pack, but the Bible's sales have shot up 120 per cent, "The Dawkins Delusion" riposte is doing well, and the third most popular book in the category is Jesus of Nazareth. By the Pope.
But let us keep a sense of proportion here. It would appear that both Harry Potter and Gordon Ramsay have outsold Dawkins. Food and fantasy still outrank the fretful search for Truth. Incidentally, though, if you want a Christian perspective (albeit a bit agonized) on the last H.Potter, and you don't mind having the plot revealed, try Christianity Today. The big debate, it seems, is on the theological significance of Snape's divided loyalties, and whether the deathly hallows story is basically a narrative exposition of Matthew 6:19-24. Personally, I just think the end is just a cop-out, so there.
