Death of a legend, gone but never forgotten
On hearing of the news that Sunderland legend Ian Porterfield has lost his battle with cancer at the tragic age of 61, I'd just like to thank him for the great memories he has given us through out his life. He will always be remembered for the famous FA Cup Final goal against Leeds in 1973 but he also enjoyed a successful managerial career and was the last man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, at Aberdeen. Saturday's home game with Reading will definitely be an emotional day with everyone in Sunderland thinking about his wife Glenda and his family on what must be a very difficult time for them.
I don't think words can describe him as a person or his amazing contribution to football so R.I.P. Ian mate, we loved you.

Yeah I'd like to think we gave him a good send off. I do prefer a minutes of applause because it allowed everyone to generate a great atmosphere and his name echoed around the ground, which shows how much he was loved by people.
A lot of the fans like myself have never seen him play but everyone appreciated the fact he was a legend in Sunderland, and one that will never be forgotten.

Aye, RIP. From what I saw of the highlights on telly, it looks like your lot got the tribute spot on.

I'm in the same boat as you Ric with age also denying me the chance to see Ian play. However I've watched his goal against Leeds a thousand times and his name is mentioned around Sunderland that much I actually feel like I knew him. He was a great player and a loss to the game.

Sad news indeed. I'm too young to have ever seen him play but by all accounts he was a Sunderland legend. RIP
