The Best Captain Ever

George Boateng is no longer the captain of Middlesbrough FC. Southgate confirmed this a couple of days ago as questions were being asked since the Blackburn game, where Julio Arca was seen leading the team out with Boateng in the starting line-up.

Southgate has been quick to defend his decision stating it is a move that will benefit George's game and also the team's performance.
Gareth said "George's performances have been excellent and I want it to stay that way. I want him to be free in his mind to enjoy his football."

This comes after the recent bust-up between the Boro manager and player, which Southgate says is not related and he states that his decision is based purely on the performance of George in his last couple of games. Only George and Southgate will know the real reason but either way it didn't affect his performance against Blackburn as he produced another awesome display for the Boro.

As for the current captain, Southgate handed it to Arca who he feels is the right man for the job at this time with his experience on the pitch. I'm not so sure, I feel the long-term captain should be a local boy and go to Woodgate. Southgate might have other ideas though and give it to Luke Young or even the goalkeeper (Not Schwarzer).

My choice would be Woodgate. Southgate could then relate to him better because he was of course a magnificent leader himself for the team, both on and off the pitch right up until his retirement.

My favourite captain for Boro, who I've seen play, was big Nigel Pearson, he was an awesome leader for the team. He dominated everything and everyone and was a great communicator on the pitch and off it.

I thought I would ask a question this week for the readers. On the subject of captain's, I want to know who is or was the best captain you've seen in a Boro shirt? Also for the none-Boro fans, who is or was the best club captain you have ever seen play?
