Derby away: battle of the basement.... the big one!
We have fruit in our office. For various reasons the bananas go first, so it's always worth grabbing a few if you're nearby and bringing them back to your team. They can get an apple later if necessary; you don't get that choice with bananas.
Two days ago the bananas were absolutely huge. Longer than normal by perhaps three inches, and thicker! Very thick. It was obscene. Normally the bananas are an alright size, sometimes quite scrawny, but these ones... whew. I handed one to each of the three girls I sit with. We all had the same thought. A bewildered silence hung in the air. We were definitely all thinking the same thing. Then it passed and we all tucked in.
Tomorrow's game is like that. We've been saying for weeks that the games have been big, have been 'must win' games, but tomorrow's really is a monster. If we can't beat Derby (and we've already failed at this once, remember) we will surely be doomed to relegation. Maybe not mathematically, but I don't know that we could recover mentally. The players must have been eyeing this fixture for weeks. Now here it is. The easiest game left. And they have to win it. Have to. Fulham haven't won away for a very long time, but that has to end tomorrow.
It's petrifying for us fans. There will be a couple of thousand of us in Derby tomorrow and we should make some serious noise. Derby, I understand, have had good support despite everything, so the atmosphere should be good, but really, we should be better than them on the field. Must be. They're a genuinely dire side and short of confidence, while we still harbour thoughts of being an average side down on its luck. We must win.
