Dizzy Spell
Well, what was all the panic about eh? At half time on Saturday, a few Geordies were developing nervous twitches as results all looked to be conspiring against us and the whiff of relegation started to appear again, but by the end of the weekend we were all but safe and with an absolute rout to our name and not even with us on the receiving end! Heady times indeed!
Given Spurs' more than ropey defence, it made sense to line up with the same attacking formation that we had in recent games and we were nearly ahead in the first couple of minutes when Beye got forward to clatter the bar. The game was wide open from start to finish and both defences looked shaky. A mate and I had just noted what a flop Bent had been when he outjumped a powder puff Faye challenge to put them one up. We shut up after that.
Spurs got on top briefly after the goal and we feared the worst but we got a goal just at the right time (which we never seem to do) when Geremi fed Butt, who steered the ball past Robinson to send us in right on the whistle level. The second half was all Newcastle and we dominated Spurs completely. Geremi put us ahead when he placed a free kick through a dodgy looking wall and past a wrongfooted Robinson and from there we just took over. The midfield trio of Geremi, Butt and Barton all had great games and were complimented with Owen and Martins dropping for the ball. The also excellent Viduka almost made it three, forcing a great save from Robinson but we didn't have to wait long when the front three combined to great effect - Oba feeding Viduka (insert joke here) feeding Owen to finish coolly and send us delirious.
There was time for Martins to go through and finish calmly to make it four and the scoreline in the end didn't flatter us. This was our best performance of the season and all of a sudden the clouds are starting to lift. Job not quite but almost done and for once it feels like we can start to look forward to games again. Here's hoping.
