What’s The Point ?
You could almost have predicted the outcome of Tottenham’s game at the JJB Stadium before the match took place. In fact, rotten at predicting as I am, that is exactly what I did on the MEHSTG website. It is a bit like a film you have seen before where you know that there will be a happy ending for someone. And further to that, it might be worth a punt on the last three Spurs games finishing 1-1.
Juande Ramos came out this week and said that the players would not be able to influence his view of them, which he has formed since his arrival in November, with the remaining matches against Bolton Wanderers, Reading Liverpool
Perhaps he has seen in that short time what we Tottenham fans have witnessed over the last two seasons.
Berbatov is a class player. No question. Most teams would be more than happy to have him in their side, but there are times when the self-regarding attitude he has for his own importance overcomes what he can do for the team. Therefore, a bid of £30 million would hopefully fund an equally talented replacement and rid us of the spoutings of his self-promoting agent. If we can keep him, all well and good, but if he has to go, let’s make some extreme profit. Sometimes these “Star Wars” can get a bit of a saga.
The goalkeeping position needs to be addressed. Cerny has done well, but looks to be on his way and maybe Paul Robinson has played his last game, unless Ramos has a sentimental side and will let him take the gloves for the Liverpool
Hopefully, Ramos will have learned that playing players out of position does not work. The pairing of Zokora and O’Hara in defence to fill in for Chimbonda and Woodgate did not work, with the goal Wigan Athletic scored being a ball into Heskey in space near the ‘D’ (like a Raider of the Last Arc) and the chance when Marcus Bent hit the bar nothing more than a regulation straight pass that opened the defence up like Roy Schneider’s knife through a shark’s belly in “Jaws”. It was all too easy and without our Superman Ledley King and potential new captain Jonathan Woodgate out, Michael Dawson and Didier Zokora got themselves off the Hook with some last ditch tackles.
The midfield look industrious and with Jermaine Jenas looking like a marathon man, he just lacks the poise of a hitman, as the chance he was provided with by Aaron Lennon was fired over the top with his left foot. His work often escapes the eye of reporters, such as those in the empire of the Sun and there is little reflection in their minority reports about his effect on a game. With Lennon showing how important the need for speed can be, there is also Steed Malbranque, who provides the French connection on the left. Huddlestone is Rock which the team have been playing around, with his solid frame and educated left and right feet spraying the ball to all corners of the ground … and most of the time to a yellow shirt.
Up front alongside Berbatov, Robbie Keane was a man who looked back in anger when he was substituted again, but he had not had one of his best games and handed over possession when the Lactics scored. He was replaced among the strikers by the third man – Darren Bent. A man who would do better of he had some service and his colleagues will have to learn that chances have to be taken.
With little to play for, Spurs cannot seem to summon up the wherewithal to go the full 90 minutes. Goodness knows how they managed ET in the League Cup Final.
Sporting Director Damien Comolli might need to duel to always get his man this summer, but you can bank on him being a regular at the terminal at airports from Munich
Having finished fifth for the last two seasons and having reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in the last two seasons too, perhaps Juande can give us one of those Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
But to do so, the players will need to be pushing through the twilight zone to get to where we all want them to be.
