Finally, the season starts...
Thankfully, after all the rumours, friendlies against everyone from clubs we own to our big local rivals at Sheffield FC, the season is almost under way.
We've been linked with a multitude of players, we've sold Rob Hulse for decent money and, miracle of miracles, Geoff Horsefield has gone, presumably being humanely dispatched and then rendered down for glue. Several Academy players have moved on, although I doubt that the knacker's yard will have been needed for them, just a change of scenery and a move to a smaller club.
The new players that have signed should be good for us, as we've already seen what David Cotterill can do, and Darius Henderson has scored enough in this division for Watford to not be a gamble. When will the first "Henderson relishes...." headline appear? (For the benefit of any southern or foreign readers Henderson's Relish is like Worcestershire sauce, but a hell of a lot better. If God eats pies, you can bet He puts this on them.)
So the other important things are what we need to think about.
Will Lee Hendrie realise his potential, or get mardy, have a big strop and go out on loan? Again.
Will James Beattie score loads of goals? Again.
Will Chris Morgan look menacing, like he could rip off your head and p** down your neck? Yes.
Will the boo-boys be screaming for Blackwell's head if we aren't top of the league at Christmas?
Will Billy Sharp score early on in the season and keep banging them in?
Other thoughts have troubled me this summer. Why did we need to support a different country for the Euros, apart from to give the big-eared crisp salesman a reason to be on a three week jolly to Austria?
Has Alan Shearer been lobotomized? As a friend of mine said, "Now we've got "Visit Malta" on our shirts will Wednesday get "Visit Maltby" on theirs?" As presumably the majority of people in this country aren't Man Utd or Real Madrid fans did we really need to see pictures of poor enslaved Cristiano sizzling like one of Walls' finest bangers?
So now the season is nearly upon us, and tomorrow we face Birmingham City. Here's to hoping they are still suffering a relegation hangover, and we can start with three points.
Up The Blades.
