Call to action for unemployed lawyers
More than 10,000 lawyers could be out of work by the end of the recession, according to some estimates, which if nothing else is a terrible waste of talent. So RollOnFriday and LawWorks, the legal access charity, have come up with a plan.
With the backing of The Law Society and 25 City firms, they're launching a new scheme aimed at using the expertise of those out-of-work lawyers for the benefit of charities and social projects. Matthew Rhodes, publisher of RollOnFriday, estimates the initative could provide £10 million in free legal advice.
"It seemed absurd that these individuals should be unable to make use of their highly sought-after legal skills until the market turns," Rhodes says. "It's a win-win situation."
Anyone who wants to get involved can find more details at www.rollonfriday.com. Beats sitting around at home.
This is not a "win-win situation"; it seems, at least to me, more like a greedy way of hiring free talent, using "guaranteed interviews" as bait.
What about the young people who only recently started training? Nobody apparently wants to know us - I even offered my services for free to keep the "career" in motion, but sadly my limited experience and Oxbridge PhD mean nothing during the "unfortunate economic downturn".
