Championless

Isn't it always the way? Just as you start getting enthusiastic about something, it is whipped away from you. A few days ago, the Champions Trophy was a big yawn. Suddenly it has come to life with two cracking matches between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Tuesday and Australia and West Indies yesterday. I scampered in to work, anxious to see what feast was laid on today. And, naturally, there is no match on. Bah!

If the Champions Trophy were a woman, it would be one of those rather plain librarian girls who turns out to be gorgeous when she lets her hair down and takes off her glasses, only to turf you out of her house at 11pm just as your courting is getting fruity. A bit like Kate Winslet in Enigma only without the Nazis.

For England that makes the World Cup like one of those girls you see in a club who you like but know is out of your league and anyway is just going to end up going home with some big Australian bloke.
