Mugabe heads for the exit

If reports are correct - and if some massive piece of electoral corruption isn't just round the corner - Zanu-PF appear to have lost the election in Zimbabwe, which should mean that Robert Mugabe's reign as president is near an end. While it is always hard to forecast the future when there has been regime change (whether democratically or militarily enforced), this surely must be a good thing.

Not only does it give Zimbabwe's new leaders a chance to correct the course of its economy and tackle the widespread corruption and social deprivation in the country, but it may mean a return to the international fold of the Zimbabwe cricket team. All those tough decisions about their 2009 tour to England may now not need to be taken by the ECB or the British government and, like in 2005, we shall begin an Ashes summer with a couple of easy matches to get our eye in. OK, not as important as dealing with galloping inflation and a life expectancy nearing 30, but important enough.

Patrick,

If it were only so easy. The military have already said they will only support Mugabe.

If he does go then that raises the question where will he go.

My guess is to the BCCI as ethics commissioner

All I can say is that the ECB had better move quickly with their offer. And it better have more noughts on it than McGrath's batting record.

It's not my only option.

Know what I mean Kidd?
