The Line & Length Monday XI

Another Monday, another quiz. And let's start with honouring some astounding feats that happened on this very day. Answers below.

Question 1 On this day eight years ago England beat West Indies within two days at Headingley after dismissing the visiting side for 172 and 61. Yet the man of the match wasn't a bowler. Who was it? A: Michael Vaughan; B: Graham Thorpe; C: Nasser Hussain

Question 2 Sticking with that match, Craig White and Andrew Caddick each took five wickets in, respectively, West Indies' first and second innings but didn't take a single wicket in the other innings. Question 3 Also on this day, in 1934, Bill Ponsford and Don Bradman inflicted one of the most depressing days on an England fielding side by putting on how many runs together in just five hours at the Oval? A: 381; B: 451; C: 471

Question 8 Who has come last in the County Championship the most times? A: Derbyshire; B: Glamorgan; C: Northamptonshire

Question 9 What is the highest total ever made in the County Championship? A: 787; B: 887; C: 987

Question 10 And what is the lowest? A: 12; B: 13; C: 14

Question 11 Finally, who is the only man so far to have scored 1,000 runs this season in the first division of the County Championship? A: Murray Goodwin; B: Marcus Trescothick; C: Martin van Jaarsveld

Answer 1 A, Michael Vaughan for his 76.

Answer 2 C, Gough took three in the first innings and four in the second.

Answer 3 B, 451. Painful.

Answer 4 C. Larwood was 21, Rhodes 48.

Answer 5 B. Might, mighty Essex

Answer 6 A. Northants have won twice (76 and 92), Notts have won once (87)

Answer 7 C, five. But all of them were by Notts

Answer 8 A. Derbyshire have come last 14 times, Glamorgan 10 and Northants 11.

Answer 9 B. 887 by Yorkshire v Warwicks in 1896

Answer 10 A. 12 by Northants against Gloucs in 1907

Answer 11 B. Or it was last week. Mark Ramprakash has also now passed 1,000 runs
