The plot thickens

So Kevin Pietersen did not resign until he was told that he had, it emerges. Pietersen has just put out a statement, which reads: "I wish to make it very clear that I did not resign as captain of the England cricket team this morning. However, in light of recent communications with the ECB, and the unfortunate media stories and speculation that have subsequently appeared, I now consider that it would be extremely difficult for me to continue in my current position. Accordingly, I have as of this afternoon decided to stand down as England captain with immediate effect."

Interesting. Who leaked that he had resigned then? Did someone decide to make his position untenable? How wonderfully Machiavellian.

KP confirmed that he is off to the Caribbean with England, however, which means we are denied the wonderful irony of a recall for Michael Vaughan to replace the man who has lost his job because he apparently wanted Vaughan to tour.

Gower or maybe it was Willis on Sky Sports News hinted that the story this morning of Pietersen resigning originated from people close to him. I get the feeling KP is trying to spin himself out of looking bad and he's doing a very bad job of it.
