Darling "not up to the job" - Tories

George Osborne tonight

20_04_2004_2159

So much for the Conservatives being nice to Alistair Darling. Even though Downing Street says it is strongly backing the Chancellor -- they say it is "rubbish" to suggest a deterioration in relations -- the Tories smell trouble. George Osborne's reaction to Darling's non-dom changes is striking. So striking, in fact, that it must have been authorised by David Cameron. He says:

"In times of economic uncertainty, people need a Chancellor who can demonstrate strength of leadership and consistency of judgement. With Alistair Darling, we have neither.
"In his time at Number 11, he has gone from one retreat to another and his economic incompetence, whether on Northern Rock, Capital Gains Tax or now non-domiciled taxation is doing real damage to the real economy. The question for our dithering Prime Minister is how long can he keep someone at the Treasury who is clearly not up to the job."

Get Darling and they show Brown to have bad judgement. And if Balls, a media and commons disaster, takes over as suggested, they get to shoot at Brown's key adviser of the last 10 years. As he tries to claim all is well with the economy. That should be entertaining.
