The happiest person at the TUC Congress

The monstering of David Miliband by Derek Simpson, the Unite union's joint general secretary, appears to have caused nervousness amongst allies of the Foreign Secretary  - and a very happy Charlie Wheelan.

Supporters of Miliband claimed privately that Unite's support for Brown stemmed from Charlie Whelan, Brown's former spin doctor and now the political director of Unite. One source described Whelan as the most powerful figure inside the Labour party - since Unite was underwriting Labour finances.

Don't forget that Derek Simpson fought the Blairite Sir Ken Jackson for the leadership of Amicus the forerunner of Unite.

I would contest the last thing Simpson needs is a man who has been described as ultra New Labour in charge of the Labour Party.
